Whatever happened to genuine, original, and interesting pop-rock? I am talking about catchy, poppy, fun, yet meaningful rock music that dares the listener not to sing along and tap his or her feet… yeah, it is a bit rare that a band has all of these qualities. Despite the common belief and ridiculous amount of bands that fight this fact, it is possible that a band can play straight-forward pop-rock and still be groundbreaking! Just take a look at the most name-dropped influential band in that “scene”, The Cure. Those guys played classic and timeless pop-rock through their years, but they never seemed like simple media whores or boring radio poster children. Nowadays, finding a pop-rock band that hasn’t sacrificed all credibility for a paycheck and arena tour is like finding a piece of hay in a stack of needles – not only is it hard as hell, its painful to even try! Well, quit being the media pincushion, turn off your radio, don’t bother with all the new emo-pop princes like Acceptance and The Spill Canvas… instead, divert your ears and attention to Nightmare of You.

Nightmare of You is a daring and striking four-piece from New York that has been around the block in different forms for quite some time, which is evident in the band’s list of prior projects. Lead vocalist Brandon Reilly is best known for being the lead guitarist in the highly respected pop-punk band, The Movielife, while ex-Glassjaw and Rival Schools member Sammy Siegler joins in on drums. Though their works apart from each other are phenomenal, disregard it all, erase their sights and sounds from your memory, and prepare to hear a witty, powerful, and intelligent pop-rock masterpiece.

Nightmare of You’s self-titled album carries a swagger and edge that very few bands in the scene are able to create, but it fits very nicely right beside Say Anything’s …is a Real Boy. The album kicks off its straight-forward pop-rock explosion with the opener, entitled “The Days Go by Oh So Slow”, which uses sharp verses and catchy choruses to tell a story of genuine, unexaggerated love. If you are looking for lines that talk about slitting wrists to prove love for a girl or how the ocean looks like some chick’s eyes, then you may not want to listen to this; however, if you aren’t completely obsessed with your haircut and your internet journal, you’ll understand and connect with lines such as “If you would rather stay in at night, then I can relate to that, and if you feel like your heart is dried up then I can relate to that” and “I can be yours to spend your life with, and we’ll hide indoors petrified of the world.”

Maybe it is just me, but with all of the over-exaggerated bullshit ideas of love that flood emo headphones, it is quite refreshing to hear someone say it how it should be said! Don’t get too comfortable with the cliché love song thing though, because the next track, “Dear Scene, I Wish I Were Deaf”, shifts agendas to call out scene kid antics and elitist attitudes (not quite as good as “Admit It” by Say Anything, but still very nice), yet that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface in regards to this band’s knack for playing pop with intellect and edge.

The most glaring and daring characteristic that this band exhibits, is a love for profoundly sexual lyrics, yet they don’t sound like rappers after some random piece of ass, instead it sounds more like guys just struggling with love and lust… and more often than not, they get quite caught up in the lust. Track three, “Thumbelina”, is a perfect example of this sexual lyricism, as it finds the writer trying his hardest to convince a girl that her husband has no clue what she “needs” while also exploiting her many sexcapades… but, he obviously still has the hots for her. Track Nine, “In the Bathroom is Where I Want You”, is also laden with such sexual lyrics, but don’t think that this guy doesn’t want to fall for this girl that he is seeking to court in the lavatory… oh no, he wants to fall in love, but “he doesn’t know how to.”

Every song on this disc is absolutely amazing and unique, but a couple of other standouts are track 4 and its Robert Smith-esque vocals and 80s pop sound (even including the patented excited shriek that The Cure frontman made his own), and the alt-country lullaby that is track 8, aptly titled, “Marry Me”. You are bound to get a wide range of emotions, heartaches, stories, and shocks while listening to Nightmare of You’s self-titled album.

Overall, if you want to hear an album that not only pushes the buttons of its own genre, but also the buttons of music in general, then crank up Nightmare of You’s new CD and enjoy yourself. Sex, Secrets, Lies, Love, Lust, Confusion, and everything else that My Chemical Romance tried to purvey in their latest album, is now full-fledged and done much better through Nightmare of You. Trying to find a band that sounds like these guys is just about impossible… so just grab this disc and see for yourself. This album will make your jaw drop, whether it be their sound, their energy, their lyrics, or all of the above… that is for you to decide.

I can't get into anything these guys have released(ep,album), it just seems to be boring the second a song starts...I've tried liking it many times, forcing myself to throw it on, but nothing.
