Years ago “punk” was just about as far away from mainstream as you could get. It was an ideal, a movement, and out of that came some damn good movement. Today we have the “pop punk” genre. An oxymoron by 80’s standards, it’s quite the opposite today. New Found Glory are one of the groups that have risen to the top. Catalyst, their 7th album doesn’t stray too far from their last effort.
New Found Glory are kings at crafting catchy, bouncing melodies and harmonies that will stick in your head all day. After just a couple listens I couldn’t stop walking around whistling tunes like All Downhill From Here (the first single) and Doubt Full. As with their past releases, this album includes its ballads. Truth of My Youth and Ending in Tragedy are two you’ll want to check out if you’re into the softer stuff. Interestingly, the short leadoff track is the most “punk” sounding of the whole album.
While NFG don’t break too much new ground in their sound, they sure can craft a catchy song. They’re seasoned veterans of the music business now and their sound reflects that. Die hard fans of the band will find plenty to rock out to and I’m sure the MTV/TRL crowd will be getting an earful of this disc as well.
