Passion is a crucial element to any band’s success. No matter how many finger-tapping solos, bone-crunching breakdowns or non-traditional time signatures a band might offer in any given song, they have nothing if they don’t have the drive to make their listeners feel something. North Carolina’s My Epic seem to have grasped this concept, as they have illustrated the definition of passion throughout the 10 tracks of their second full-length, Yet. While not necessarily bringing a significant amount of new musical ideas into the post-rock genre, the album offers a 47-minute slice of faith-based, melodic rock that attests to My Epic’s dedication to heartfelt songwriting.

The band has noted their influences from artists such as As Cities Burn and Thrice, and these influences are extremely apparent in the opener, “Author.” After the feedback-laden intro, the band kicks into gear with a surprisingly full guitar sound considering that it is coming from a three-piece. Much of this track sounds like it could have fit perfectly on Come Now Sleep, but this is not to say that the song feels rehashed in any way, as the opening two tracks are the highlights of the entire album with “Lower Still” featuring a riff that Thrice wishes they included in the Fire volume of The Alchemy Index. Needless to say, the song rocks hard and serves up all the best of what the band has to offer.

“Rich” and “Patience and Silence” come across as significantly large departures from the earlier sounds of the album, offering a much more delicate and inspirational vibe. It is easy to picture the latter as a worship song with lyrics such as, “You’re the only one to fear, You’re the only one who loves me as I am, You alone are my defender, You alone will be my judge.” While these tracks may not satisfy those who are only interested in the heavier side of things, it is clear that the band means every word, which seems to be a rarity these days.

The middle of the album loses momentum here and there, only to sprinkle in dashes of heavy, crunchy glory in tracks such as “Sound and Fury” and “Ashes,” further emphasizing the band’s desire to blend sensitive melodies with layers of atmospheric distortion plucked straight out of the best post-rock releases. After the lull of “Further Up / Further In,” the album closer “Perfector” leaves a great impression of the album as a whole. Kicking off with an instantly memorable, dreamy riff, the song flows effortlessly into as grand of a conclusion as you would expect from the indications of the opening few tracks.

Yet is an album that effectively expresses the passion and ambition of My Epic (with pretty incredible cover art as well), presenting them as a band not trying to impress you with their delay pedals, but only trying to share their faith and maybe rock your socks off a bit in the process.

I really liked their debut EP and their last album was a pretty awesome post-rock / post-indie type of release. Supposedly this is a lot heavier than they've been in the past. I need to give it a spin.

Initial thoughts... definitely good. I can really hear the Thrice influences on some of these songs and I like some of the heavier moments.  However, I think this is a bit of a step back from I Am Undone, which almost made it into my top 10 last year.  They feel less emotional on this album than their last.  It's still a solid album, but it's not quite what I had hoped for.

I definitely feel that the heavier moments are the best moments of the album.  The mellow tracks are good, but they don't quite leave the emotional impact that the others do.

I'm really enjoying this album now and also get quite a strong SDRE / Jermey Enigk vibe - at least from the lighter vocals. How does their first album compare? Still worth checking out?

I am Undone is a little less heavy and is more post-rock influenced at times. I like it more than Yet. Definitely worth checking out.
