It takes a lot of guts for a band to leave the worry of what their fans want completely out of the picture when writing an album. For a group to do this successfully it takes great skill, passion and faith to not disappoint; and My Epic has yet to disappoint. Yet was an incredible journey. From the musical brilliance of "Rich" to some of the deepest, most understandable lyrics on the track "Perfector," Yet truly did not disappoint. Following Yet, My Epic has returned with an acoustic EP, Broken Voice, and regardless of this being an acoustic album, the recipe has not changed: these guys have undeniable talent.
The album opens with “Centuries,” which is a gentle guitar track to warm the listener up for what is about to transpire. “Beloved” is next and storytelling, a common trend in music nowadays, is the direction the band starts with. My Epic is at the top of their game when it comes to this type of music. "Beloved" opens with a storytelling kind of flow and ten seconds in that familiar voice of Aaron Stone joins in the track. Aaron has a way of letting people know what is really on his mind. His opening line, “There are nights now, when I don't dream. I awake in the darkness, to find I’ve been weeping,” is a key indication that you're in for a treat over the next 6 tracks.
It's probably worth mentioning that My Epic is quite a faith-based Christian band. It takes about to two tracks of any of their albums to figure it out, but it doesn't detract from the overall quality of their music. The album continues with “Deathbed,” a quicker track, but its entire premise is based on death and how people are afraid of it. Like I said earlier, faith is a huge part of this band, so naturally, the rest of this track is about how Aaron is no longer afraid of death or darkness.
The next track, “Lazarus,” puts the listener in a very upbeat mood. With a resounding chorus from the vocal talents of the rest of the band, the notes go up and down swimming about telling the story of Lazarus from the Bible, creating the best track on the EP. After "Lazarus" listeners may expect to hear more gooey happy goodness for the last three tracks. Unfortunately the next two songs, “Garden” and “Childbodybride,” seem to be a cool down. At this point the band includes a few more instruments and really speeds up the pace but doesn’t let go of the deep, meaningful lyrics. With the last track being an acoustic worship remake, fans may be a little letdown from the momentum shift.
Broken Voice is a great bridge between the band's past works and whatever the band decides to do next. It’s a relaxed, acoustic, stripped down My Epic. If they can continue to write tracks with half the passion they’ve put into Yet and Broken Voice they’ll be around for a while. I myself will be waiting with great anticipation.
