It takes a lot for a band to stand out in today's musical landscape. With the internet creating such a simple distribution tool for bands, leading to over saturation in every single genre, artists relying on aesthetics and gimmicks to bypass the integrity and hard work of their elders are becoming alarmingly more commonplace. It is therefore a huge delight to hear a band managing to create a debut EP bereft of pretense and filler in a genre now teetering on the brink of collapse.

Misdelphia's debut release I Can Motivate The Sun crams all of the huge pop soundscapes and glossy production of major label acts such as Boys Like Girls and Saosin; but where both acts all but disappear behind the veneer of modern production technology, Misdelphia maintain the hunger and passion of a band you would expect to hear only on their fuzzy demo tapes.

From opener "Louder Sounds"' euphoric lead guitar line, to the moment singer Jordan Wark's massive vocals kick in (think Anthony Green on Saosin's self titled EP, but with a distinct and unique edge), it is abundantly clear that this EP is something special. The chorus to "Louder Sounds" alone should be enough to sell anyone on the band, but remarkably the band bring something new with each subsequent track. Each song builds to an irresistible hook, yet not in the way most mainstream pop rock acts often plod through a tepid verse simply to reach the chorus again, but with memorable structures that hint at experience beyond their years.

It really must be noted again just how marvelous Wark's vocals are; his vocals melting around the lyrics, shaping them with a unique flavour, lending to a sound the band can build on and use to huge success. The EP is rounded out with an acoustic track, "I'm OK", which instead of appearing as a hollow attempt at displaying the band's "many talents" goes towards showing a different side of the band's songwriting and makes their full length an even more exciting prospect. I Can Motivate The Sun is a near-flawless work of pop rock and one of the most exciting and ambitious debuts of 2009.

This sucks, these guys are generic. This kid sounds nothing like Anthony Green.

Hmm... for all the hype, this is kind of average... so it looks like I'm in agreement with the others here...
