Australia is a long way off from the United States, but the guys of Miles Away bring a familiar sound. With their Comeback Kid-esque gang screams, these Perthian dudes bring a mix of tough guy hardcore and driving rhythms that will knock you on your ass.

This import arrives to the US via Common Bond Records and Bridge Nine Records. Neither is very well known in the US. Although just released here, it has been available overseas for just less than a year. On their self titled debut, Miles Away fit right into the current hardcore climate. The vocal stylings tend towards shouting more than screaming. The guitars are moderately distorted and played with a deliberate sense of urgency. This is the key to today’s more accessible hardcore. Backed by precise drum blasts at a feverish tempo, most songs are over by the 2 minute mark. The drum and bass sometimes lose significance in the mix. Bringing them up would’ve tightened the sound without drowning out the vocals and guitars.

The opener "Worlds Apart" is a good start to what the rest of the disc offers. Deeper within, "This Heart", continues the assault and gives the listener a good picture of what they have to offer. Filling in the rest of the album are eight other tracks of punishing hardcore fury. A steady momentum drives this disc straight to the end. Unfortunately, the best feature of the album is also its downfall. Songs tend to blur together with no real defining features. One thing is for sure. There will be no lack of breakdowns with the likes of Miles Away around.

Miles Away hope to gain further success down under by constant touring and a don’t-turn-back attitude. They find themselves right at home here in the U.S. At the same time it may be hard to distinguish them from the barrage of recent hardcore groups to hit the scene.

Miles Away = straight up, decent hardcore. 3/5 in my book sounds about right.

pretty decent straight-ahead hardcore... 3/5 does indeed sound good.
