When thinking of organized crime back in the early 20th century, Bonnie & Clyde comes to mind, but Maylene “Ma” Barker and her sons were nowhere in the brainstorming process. Although to lead singer Dallas Taylor, Ma Barker is everything. The band’s sophomore album is focused around Ma and her sons and the crimes that were committed by them in the 1930’s. Some people speculate and believe that J. Edgar Hoover was the one that encouraged the myth that Ma was a criminal to justify the FBI’s killing of her. Even her son, Alvin Karpis said, “The most ridiculous story in the annals of crime is that Ma Barker was the mastermind behind the Karpis-Barker gang.” While that subject is still up for debate, Maylene has set their eyes at becoming heavy music’s “Public Enemy Number 1.”
Looking back at the band’s previous self-titled endeavor, the guys went for a straight, heavy sounding southern rock album. Dallas’ vocals were rough and rugged and the instrumentation was loud. On II, the guys shed their former self and undoubtedly blow the last album out of the water. Everything ranging from the musicianship to the vocals the guys have improved greatly. On the lead single, “Dry the River”, Dallas’ vocals have more of a bar swagger and cockiness behind them than before. It seems that Dallas has found the sound he’s comfortable with. He absolute rips and roars through the album like a bat out of hell. For a prime example, take a listen to “Plenty Strong and Plenty Wrong”. He commands the mic and gives you the feeling that you are going 100mph down the highway in your hot rod. The only thing that could have taken this song to the next level would’ve been a guest appearance by Lemmy from Motorhead.
Instrumentally, the guys are tighter than ever. On “Darkest of Kin”, the triple guitar attack is just colossal. It is sure to knock you on your ass. Once that song finishes, Maylene hits you with a one-two punch in the form of “Wylie”. The guitars mix a combo of blues and southern rock. Alongside Dallas’ “don’t give a fuck” vocals, the song is sure to make you move your feet or make you knockout the guy hitting on your girlfriend. I could have easily seen this song playing during the bar fight in the movie Roadhouse.
II is a top-notch southern rock/metal effort. Call it whatever you want, this album is absolutely brutal. To anyone skeptical, there is no need to worry. This album goes above and beyond any expectations that may have been set. Maylene is easily going to make themselves known in the rock and metal community with this release.

Ever heard In Reverent Fear? One of, if not the best Christian band out there.

As for this cd, I like the last one better.

Haha, I've seen In Reverent Fear live and they're absolutely terrible. I've heard I saw them in their more recent stage of shitty singing and what not though, so maybe their old stuff is better.
