Ludo have made a name for themselves since they released their Island Records debut You're Awful, I Love You last year. With a nonstop touring schedule and playing plenty of music festivals, the band has built up quite the fan base in only a year. Their new album will only add to their fan base with their combination of gritty alternative rock and pop punk love ballads, but does it stand up to their previous album?
Prepare The Preperations starts strongly with “Too Tired To Wink,” a great opener into the album that provides a pretty good introduction to the band's sound. The band continues on with “Whipped Cream” which is pretty catchy and very suggestive. The chorus is one you will probably find yourself humming after you hear this song. “Anything For You” is an acoustic love ballad that has some pretty creative lyrics, but while it is a decent track, it just seems to stray too far from the band's energy in the previous songs. “Manta Rays” is another love song, but it has a bit more of an energetic feeling to it that makes it fit more into the album than the previous track. The band slows down again with a 50's-rock sounding ballad, “I'll Never Be The Same.” While gimmicks can be fun on an album, this song just isn't that great and kind of boring.
“Skeletons On Parade” is an interesting song that starts with a theatrical singing part from Volpe that is soon turned around into a jazzy sounding song. It is a decent theatrical song for the band; it just isn't that catchy. The band goes back to rocking with a song about pirates called “Rotten Town.” This is one of the stronger songs on the album, with plenty of catchy riffs, creative lyrics, and even some gang vocals. “Safe In the Dark” is a pretty nice closer for the album and probably one of the best songs on the album. The song itself is pretty cool with call and response lyrics and a big chorus part that keeps coming back stronger than before.
While Ludo's latest album may not be perfect, it has a handful of songs that showcase their creativity as well as their musicianship. Go ahead and listen to this album for yourself and decided how you feel. It has a wide enough spectrum of songs that almost anyone could find something to enjoy. Prepare The Preparations may not be as solid of an album as You're Awful, I Love You was, but at least it has some decent songs on it.
