To be the leaders of an entire genre can be overwhelming. Most bands will crack under the pressure, but Killswitch Engage have held their ground... for now. With their new album, As Daylight Dies, the flag-bearers of the American Metal movement are under heavy scrutiny. Why is this, you ask? Let’s just say there really isn’t a band that comes close to Killswitch Engage in the American Metal category, except maybe Lamb of God.
When listening to KSE you know you are in for a whirlwind of guitar solos, ballistic drums, and Howard Jones’ signature vocals. To some, As Daylight Dies almost sounds like The End of Heartache Part II. In reality, it is the truth. The album doesn’t deter much from the sound that was captured on their previous endeavor. Even though you aren’t introduced to another side of KSE, it doesn’t really matter. Take a look at Slayer and NOFX, for instance. Those bands make the same album over and over and people still love them. To constantly reinvent yourself seems to be the buzz word for the music industry, but a lot of bands that do, fall completely on their faces.
As Daylight Dies is metal. There is no denying that. Lead single “My Curse” is the exact reason why KSE is so popular. Howard Jones commands your attention with his ever-expanding vocal range while Adam and the rest of the guys mend the fences with their tight knit guitar work and lighting speed drum work. What really sets KSE apart is their ability to create melody in their songs. It’s a big reason why people have caught onto the band and have made them so popular.
With its positives, As Daylight Dies has some negatives. One being the constant build up in the verses that soon drown into a slow chorus. It’s not a bad thing, but when almost every song does this, it gets a little irritating. Take for example, “This Is Absolution”. Right from the beginning the song takes off like an F-16, but when the chorus hits, the energy of the song is completely withdrawn. An instance of where the slow chorus works is in “As Daylight Dies”. Also, it would be nice to see someone else man the boards rather than Adam Dutkiewicz. He does an amazing job at making the music crystal clear, but it would definitely make a change to their sound if they grabbed a different producer.
At the end of the day Killswitch Engage still fucking rock. As Daylight Dies may have some faults, but it is still a top-notch metal album.
