Some bands bend genres. Some bands create their own. Some bands are just fun. That’s Kids Like Us. An old-school hardcore band hailing from southern Florida, Kids Like Us offers nothing that new or innovative, but it’s still just so much fun that you can’t help but enjoy it on some level.
Normally, I steer clear of this genre. The whole idea of just shouting with total independence from the background music has never really appealed to me, but Kids Like Us makes it so much fun and enjoyable that there’s no way you can’t like it. The cd comes in at a solid 20 minutes or so and is intense the whole way through. Sure, some of the songs sound exactly alike, but it’s hard to distinguish songs when they’re only a minute and a half long.
The production value on the cd and the musicianship is exactly as one would expect. Everything here sounds like the rest of the old-school hardcore style, but somehow Kids Like Us has made it a lot better and more enjoyable for those that tend to steer clear of the genre. The main difference between Kids Like Us and the rest of their genre is that Kids Like Us seems to not take themselves as seriously, and that certainly pays off with a release that sets them apart.
If you’re looking for anything genre-bending or innovative, then just stay far, far away. This album is simply a fun album with some pretty funny lyrics and some good circle pit action.
