If you’re looking to kick back and relax without getting lost in the murk of a typical ambient record, Kenseth Thibideau’s minimalistic debut solo release, Repetition, may be just the ticket. I’ve often labeled this style as “gettin’ shit done” music, since it is mellow enough to be relaxing but driving enough to act as a soundtrack to proactivity. Having previously played in bands such as Tarentel, Pinback and Three Mile Pilot, Thibadeau sat down with no one but himself and recorded all eight tracks, creating an album that stands apart from his previous collaborations and represents his individual voice.

Repetition is comprised of four instrumental tracks labeled as the “Moon” series, and four tracks featuring Thibideau’s subdued vocals. “Black Hole” brings the listener into his mellow and layered soundscape with ease, sounding like the soundtrack to a summer evening. “Sun goes down on us, Earth spins round the dust,” Thibideau sings, almost whispering over the trotting bass line and layers of acoustic guitars, soft drums and electronics. “Moon 5” continues with a similar head-bobbing tempo, and “Eclipse” is a mysterious little song dripping in delay effects and spacey atmospheres. Thibideau picks up the pace with “Moon 2,” a six minute instrumental track reminiscent of label-mates Maserati. Each song occupies a different atmospheric space but flows smoothly with the tone of the album, and includes a memorable hook or two, offering dozens of memorable moments.

The album closer “Lost” is a perfect blend of drawn out instrumental sections and hushed vocals, summing up Repetition as an album that is mellow and relaxing, but never dull. Thibideau clearly knows how to pace a record, since each song feels like it falls exactly where it should. Rarely does an album fit just as well as a driving soundtrack as it does as a relaxation aid, but Repetition achieves them both.

Nothing against this review specifically, but all these 4-star reviews are getting a little ridiculous.

I feel like I need to purposely give bands bad reviews now to mix it up, haha.

Hahaha, I feel like what's the point of even reviewing it? They've been trashed so much on this site, why give them any more press.

I dug this album upon listening to it, but I find it hard to return to it.
