Kaddisfly is a band that has some pretty obvious influences, or a few bands that they just really, really like. Names like Brazil, Coheed and Cambria and At The Drive In come to mind right away. Most times when reviews start out like this there is a very good chance that said band will be ripped to shreds as nothing more than rip offs, copy cats, cover artists. This is not one of those reviews. In fact, despite the similarities to all the bands mentioned a few sentences ago Kaddisfly has set themselves apart and truly raised the bar on everything done in the past.
The music of Kaddisfly can be summed up in two words: All encompassing. The band can go from chugging hardcore riffs, to piano driven pop, to dreamy space rock, to jazz and do all four styles better than even the standard bearer in each genre.
The disc is highlighted by Chris Ruff's dynamic voice. His soaring to falsetto voice, while delicate when it needs to be, also has the added punch to pull off the more aggressive songs on the disc like "Let Weight Be Measured By Merit." Even in its most abrasive form, Ruff has the unique ability to transverse octaves seemlessly. He is at his best however in "Osmosis In C," a true jazz song that features a breakdown jazz jam by the band and 30 seconds of scat sung by Ruff. Find me another band that dares to attempt that.
Lyrically Kaddisfly is in the socially conscious arena. We're not talking politics or social agendas, but more along the lines of discovering what makes us human with lines like "They say love can move a mountain. They say love there is no other way. I say that its love that made those mountains. I say love that made us HUMAN." They also talk about equality and understanding with lines like "Streets divide cities, skin divides all of you..." With every song the band challenges their beliefs and in turn makes you take a good look at your own. It is not a preachy thing, more like an invitation to look closely at yourself.
With Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You a Unicorn Kaddisfly wrote a record that pushes boundaries on all sides. They succeeded musically in not being trapped in a single genre and lyrically Kaddisfly has written a textbook on self discovery and social consciousness. This is one of THE releases of 2005. Consider Kaddisfly on the map.
