Irrationally hating Job for a Cowboy has now been the cool thing to do for a number of years. Their help in popularizing deathcore rubbed too many metalheads the wrong way and that was all that they needed to never give them a second chance. It’s quite sad that there are so many people out there who hold themselves to a higher musical standard and refuse to take a listen to a band’s newest album, even if it means helping to hone their argument against them. With Genesis, they could have argued that the band was attempting to appease metalheads with a sound not at all their own. With Ruination, they could have argued that the band was still attempting to impress the opposition, this time with a more decidedly technical and far more boring approach. With their new Gloom EP, they could argue that the band is once again trying to impress a new crowd and find a niche all their own. I hate to break it to them, but the The Black Dahlia Murder are currently on top of this one, and they aren’t budging anytime soon.
Just to be clear, I don’t mind Job for a Cowboy. Genesis has a couple of songs that absolutely rip, and Ruination wasn’t bad, just mind numbingly boring, as most tech metal is. Doom is what it is, and Gloom certainly isn’t a bad release. The four songs end up taking the energy of Genesis, the usual JFAC sound, and blending it all together with the The Black Dahlia Murder. That’s it. That’s Gloom. There isn’t much more to it besides some typically badass guitar solos and the always impressive drumming of Jon Rice. I wouldn’t call Gloom bad, or even as monotonous as Ruination, but I’m getting a little tired of the band not being able to stick with a particular sound. It’s annoying that they’re this established and still a completely faceless act. If you’re a fan of Job for a Cowboy or the The Black Dahlia Murder and you need something to hold you over until Ritual drops later this year, go ahead and check this out. If you’re a hater, well, we’ve already been over this.

Heard of this band before, never heard them to my knowledge, I've only heard good things about them. But, I couldn't make it through the first song. I don't like the vocalist, and musically, there was nothing there that impressed me or pulled me in. In a word, boring.
