Is there currently a metal band out there that illicits such strong reactions from fans and cynics alike? It seems like just about everybody has heard of Job For A Cowboy and has a strong opinion about them, yet Genesis is only their debut full-length. It’s just funny that everyone thinks they know something about these guys when the band itself is still trying to figure out its place in the metal world.
Far and away, the deep pig snarl vocals and reliance on crushing breakdowns were the biggest gripes among underground metal fans, yet ironically enough were also two of the biggest selling points for the new wave of deathcore kids. This is the part where I tell you to throw out any preconceived idea you may have about Genesis because it is a considerably different beast than what JFAC has done before.
For starters, the above mentioned pig snarls have been completely removed from the band’s vocal onslaught leaving only Jonny Davy’s burly growl and higher-pitched gravelly scream. The boys have also all but eliminated any breakdowns that would fall into the hardcore/metalcore realm, replaced by leaner, meaner grooves more in the vein of Dying Fetus or Misery Index. The overall songwriting of the group has improved as well with an emphasis on crafting songs with more focus and memorable riffing. The songs are still completely nonlinear and the riffs still have a technical edge to them, yet the band no longer feels the need to jam 100 riffs into each song, which gives their tempo changes a lot more power this time around. Further evidence of a more focused attack, most of the songs fall around the three-minute mark, leaving very little time to do anything but pummel your senses. Even the drumming has been taken up a notch with less reliance on constant blasting, taking on a far more varied and groovy approach.
At this point it is completely unfair to continue to lump JFAC in with the current deathcore trend as they have now morphed into a modern, technical-minded death metal band. Genesis should help elevate the band beyond their former flavor-of-the-week status and open the eyes of a lot of metal fans that had already written the band off as a mere trend. This release will sit well with those of you that have been enjoying the most recent Cephalic Carnage and Odious Mortem discs.

wow! listen to the technicality of ABR's songs. how can you say that job for a cowboy is better? the only impressive part of that band is their drummer!
