It Dies Today are no strangers to the metalcore scene, forming nearly a decade ago in Buffalo, New York, the quintet has put out three releases with varying degrees of heaviness. Forever Scorned marked the band’s entry into the metalcore world and their crushing breakdowns won the hearts of many metalcore lovers. The Caitiff Choir followed a few years later with many of It Dies Today’s brutal elements intact, but the band had a noticeably more melodic sound. That album appeared to be the band’s peak as the follow up, Sirens, went too far into melodic mediocrity and was written off by many long time fans. Now, after three years of preparation, various studio issues, and a new singer, It Dies Today is finally released Lividity.
The band made some bold claims earlier in the year, saying that Lividity is the heaviest record they’ve ever put out. While the album is definitely heavier than Sirens, It Dies Today seems to have forgotten how brutal their earlier releases were, leaving Lividity somewhere in between Sirens and The Caitiff Choir. Besides adding more breakdowns to the formula, not much has changed since the last release, and if you’re heard one song, you’ve heard them all. Additionally, Jason Wood’s vocals are pretty weak for this style of music and don’t have the strength or range to keep a full length flowing. The screaming isn’t necessarily bad, but nothing really stands out about it either, which also sums up the music.
While many albums tend to peak towards the middle, plateau for a few songs, and pick up at the end again, It Dies Today chose a different approach. Lividity basically peaks at the first song and keeps getting worse as it goes on until the dreadful “Come Undone” cover ends the album. Just when you thought the trend of covering popular 80’s bands was over, It Dies Today tries to keep it alive with a Duran Duran song. In the band’s defense, there are some great breakdowns on songs like “This Ghost,” “Nihility,” and “Thank You for Drinking;” however, breakdowns alone do not make a song listenable. It Dies Today has always had the metalcore songwriting formula down, there’s no questioning that, but the band just sticks with that one formula for all of their songs. The singing vocals are also getting old, and the annoying auto-tune effect completely ruins all the melodic parts on the album.
It sounds like It Dies Today was trying to redeem themselves after Sirens, but all they really did was make a heavier version of it. The band is showing no signs of progression, which is inexcusable at this point considering the amount of time they’ve been playing this style of music. These guys are in desperate need of a band meeting with the main goal being to figure out how reinvent themselves and keep up with the other metalcore bands that are blowing them out of the water.

Definitely better than Sirens, but nothing in comparison to Caitiff Choir.

I need to check this out. I was a big fan of these guys way back and I'm hoping they recovered from Sirens.
