In recent years, it has become rather popular to splice opposing genres together, in an attempt to create something ‘fresh’ and ‘bold’. As a result, most bands usually end up combining the worst aspects of one genre with another genres weaker points, and we the listener are left with “jazz grind” and “baroque g-funk” bouncing around our mental music tagging systems. There are some bands who actually get it right though and when you have an album that is equally as likely to inspire sweat-dripping-from-the-ceiling moshpits as drug fuelled, strobe lighting punctuated field raves, you can probably be rest assured you’re onto a winner.
The long, long awaited debut album from Innerpartysystem covers so much sonic ground and crams in such rich and dark atmospherics into its 12 tracks, one is left somewhat exhausted after listening. This exhaustion is probably down to the frankly devilish air of sexual energy that pulses from every track.
As soon as opener “Die Tonight, Live Forever”s fuzzy keys kick in, parting the velvet curtain for the aural burlesque show offered across this eponymous debut, as “Don’t Stop” daintily slips off a bra strap and informs you with passion that “this. is. entertainment!” and “Obsession” takes you by the hand and leads you into the shadows; you may have to mop your brow. This is raw, passionate, dirty music and was completely worth the wait.
There are a few stumbles along the way, a few of the tracks somewhat bubble away to no real conclusion, but the plentiful standout tracks more than make up for this. It isn’t an overstatement to say that “Don’t Stop” is probably this year’s best single, simply for its euphoria inducing energy and crackling passion. Another aspect that cannot be ignored is this bands visual accompaniments of their songs, both videos released thus far and various TV spots setting up the vicious, Lynchian atmosphere that perfectly reflects the mood and tone of the album.
Any fans of hard rock, electronica, new wave or anywhere in between will find something to love about this release. So leave your inhibitions at the door and come on in. Just remember to tip well.

Even if it was... Who cares? It's done so well, that it's hard not to enjoy.

I will agree there will probably be a following of hipsters, but this album is something that has made me interested in music again. I can't really say that with anything hardcore or metal lately.

Opeth, Keep of Kalessin, and Grand Magus have all been landmarks for me this year. New Cynic is going to be up there as well.
Different strokes.
