Sweden’s Inevitable End bursts out of the gate with a ferocity reminescent of Converge and a techincal prowess similar to Calculating Infinity-era Dillinger Escape Plan. Combine the two with a death metal background and you have their second full length, The Oculus. As excellent as that pairing sounds, the outcome is unfortunately nowhere near as exciting as it should be. Sprinkled throughout the album are mediocre riffs and energetic moments, but in between are even more monotonous blasts that lack a sense of necessity. That isn’t to say that they aren’t coherent or competent, but they serve almost no purpose in the overall scheme of the album. The parts of the album which do hold some importance are a step ahead of those without, but you won’t be humming any of them after you finish the album. There is nothing memorable to be found here.
The proficiency of the musicians is staggering, yet their songwriting abilities are lacking in almost every area and make for one of the most boring listens for a “chaotic” album I’ve run across. On nearly every listen, I was zoned out by track three and it ultimately became a chore to sit through the rest of the 34 minutes that make it up. One thing I did find interesting was the group’s use of recurring motifs. They seemed to be the only things that brought me out of the musically-induced coma I was in, sort of like an Inception kick, only not nearly as bad-ass. I wish I had more to say, but the bottom line is that I don’t recommend this record for anybody but fans of the band. Even for big tech/grind fans, you will simply be wasting your time.

I agree, I thought this was just okay. I've sprinkled a few songs throughout the occasional playlist, but listening to it in its entirety just isn't happening.
Too old to bother, too young to give a shit.
