Every so often a band comes along that catches a person off-guard simply by being undeniably great at what they do. For the four-piece band How Dare You, hailing from Orlando, Florida, being great just doesn’t seem to be enough. They come off as a band that has something to prove and a message to get across, and because they come from an area so induced in the superficial, they have to succeed on another level musically and creativity-wise in order to be noticed. On their second full-length album, The King, The Clown and The Colonel, the boys in How Dare You show that they need to be on everyone’s radar as a “band to watch” from this moment forward.
Don’t kick yourself if you’ve never heard of this band before, as they are still a relatively unknown commodity to most. That’s about to change. Their debut album, Comfort Road, released in 2008, has received outstanding reviews from those whom have actually heard it, and the new album is already garnering much praise. With essentially three years under their belts since releasing their debut, the band states that the new album “is the product of the band's experiences; whether it's staying positive while entrenched in the unhappiest place on Earth, working long hours at thankless jobs or witnessing the hypocrisy that exists within the punk scene first hand.”
The King, The Crown and The Colonel kicks off with the band in top form, executing guitar leads and rhythms that would make the pioneers of the genre applaud, while the drumming and bass work is performed with precision. Hardship, the album's opening track, is a great signifier of what to expect throughout the album. Whether it’s the huge chorus, the emotional deliveries from vocalists/guitarist Elliot Meyer and Justin Goldman, or the solid lyrical content, the band will have you hooked immediately. Another positive that listeners will identify with is that many of tracks on the album seem to bridge the gap between straight-forward punk rock and a more anthem-based style of punk being found in many genres today.
Nothing done on this album is over-the-top, from the production and instrumentation right down to the gang vocals; it’s all tastefully carried out. The true beauty of this album, which in given time will become truly evident, seems to lie in the wide spectrum of listeners that it will appeal to. Whether you’re a fan of old-school punk, 90’s Blink-182 style pop-punk, early Rise Against, or even The Gaslight Anthem, this album will strike a chord and have you listening, nodding, and smiling ear-to-ear.

after my first couple listens, i would say it was a 3.5 star album for me as well. but the more i listened, the more it grew and i started to appreciate what they had created. i still listen to it every day, and love it just as much as when i wrote the review.
