Looking for the most bone-crushing metal album ever recorded? Well, Antigone, the newest album from Germany's Heaven Shall Burn, isn't exactly befitting that title, but it's pretty damn close.
Heaven Shall Burn struck absolute gold with their political masterstroke Whatever It May Take back in 2002 on Lifeforce Records, which led to the band signing with Century Media for Antigone. Their overtly political and untraditional approach to death metal made them local heroes in their native Europe, but they barely made a wave in America. Of course, within the very small and loyal metal circuit, the album sold quite well -- but Antigone is their first album to sport a truly grand production, and in the vein of labelmates God Forbid and The Forsaken, Heaven Shall Burn tear it up in stride.
"The Weapon They Fear" mixes Chimaira with Slayer, "The Only Truth" is the Euro version of God Forbid, "Architects of the Apocalypse" mixes Fear Factory with Kalmah, and "Voice of the Voiceless" is Dimmu Borgir and The Haunted. Now, if those don't paint a perfect picture of all the glorious metal this band has to offer, the actual music will. Each song on Antigone is fabulously detailed, complete with double-bass thrash and enough heavy guitar to make your neck snap after trying to keep up your head headbanging with it's often insanely fast tempo.
Unlike most death metal bands, Heaven Shall Burn doesn't sing about how much Satan rules their bedpost. This band is all about the important facts of life, and reaches out with opinions that are just as fierce as their music. However, even if politics aren't your thing, the song subjects are easily avoidable. All one must do is just appreciate the amazing skills of this amazing band that mix glorious amounts of Euro-style death, Los Angeles thrash, and New York 'we-won't-take-your-shit' attitude.
Fierclessly flawless, Antigone is a definite masterpiece in a genre that's lately been overflooded with a whole bunch of wannabes that continually overshadow those who deserve the spotlight. Fuck bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Darkest Hour, Heaven Shall Burn is where it's at.
