Everyone knows that I am the resident non-hardcore fan, so when I found out that I was getting the Folly cd to review I had to mentally prepare myself. That being said, I have no basis to compare this record to any other release so my views should be completely unbiased.
The cd starts out with about 45 seconds of detuned guitarage, very similar to the start of the Armor For Sleep cd, so I'm thinking "Hmmm, this isn't too heavy, maybe I have nothing to worry about"....Then I was hit with a hardcore explosion. "Chugging guitar, double bass drumming, agressive growl. Thats about right," I thought. Then Folly threw me a curveball. "What the fuck?! Is that ska? No, it couldn't be," I thought. So then I started the track over because really, who has ska infused into hardcore? I played the song back, and it sounded the same and then, "Holy shit, they really did put ska into this song!" It took me a minute to process it. After considering it a minute I came to the conclusion that throwing a ska/punk breakdown into the song was pretty sweet. By this point I was really getting into the record. The vocals are a mix between the growling scream of a Demon Hunter and the tenor shout of Davey Havok of AFI.
Folly really does a great job of keeping you on your toes with this record. Whenever you think you have a song figured out, they throw in a different musical genre, or a funny time signature, most of which I couldn't figure out, even after 10 years of formal music training. Aside from the musical prowless these guys posess, the lyrics are introspective without being emo. They make you take a good hard look at yourself and question things.
I guess the biggest drawback for some may be what I think is so neat about this album-the variance of musical styles. If you're a hardcore or metal purist, you're probably gonna think these guys are about as credible as Boys Night Out, but if you're looking for a fun hardcore album to listen to, Folly's "Insanity Later" is one you need to pick up. (Did I just say fun and hardcore in the same sentence?) In fact, they may have just invented a new genre: "Skacore."
