Well, you could never accuse Finntroll of being unoriginal -- it's safe to say that they're probably the only band out there combining Finnish folk, polka, and intense metal. Sure, there are a lot of weird acts coming out of Finland, but just imagining 'polka' and 'metal' working and forming a cohesive whole is a definite stretch. Apparently, the idea came about during a drunken stupor in 1997, and either the bandmates haven't woken up from it or they're under the sick delusion that it actually works for them.

Finntroll's second studio album for Century Media, titled Nattfödd is basically what would happen if you combined the dance scene from the first Lord of the Rings film (the hobbit jig?) with death metal. There's a lot of keyboards, synths, polka, and hyped-up, jig-inducing elements on top of the somewhat standard, but mostly-detuned sound of Finnish death metal. At one point during the first song, "Vindfärd / Människopesten", it almost sounds like there's a recorder in there -- no, not a 24-track, but that instrument that's basically a retarded version of the flute.

And well, the first track is light compared to the shit that takes part in track numero 2. "Eliytres" sounds like what a combined effort of ska, polka, and metal that's not sung in English would sound like. Not like you could tell that this band doesn't sing in English apart from the song titles, but still. This is some weird shit.

Apparently, this kind of music has an actual word devoted to it -- humppa, or something like that. Well, that's the Finnish folk name, but whatever. Just imagine Weird Al, Reel Big Fish, Dimmu Borgir, and a bunch of Hobbits on stage jamming out, and you have a pretty accurate description of this band.

Yes, this is a turn for the more weird side of life, even by Century Media standards. But that doesn't mean it's not interesting -- this album does have some enjoyable metal moments. However, it's too damn embarrassing to listen to in public. If you've ever seen Office Space, you'll know about the part when Michael Bolton stops rapping his gangsta shit when he sees cars pass by, and he turns it down instantly. Well, if you listen to this album, make sure you've mastered the art of pretending you don't, like Michael did. Listen with caution!

This is alright, but it can only be listened to so many times before it's fucking ridiculous. If you like weird shit, this might be your new audible bible, though.

I just recently stumbled across Finntroll and I am now a complete convert.  I absolutely love them!  Humppa may be ridiculous and quasi-lame, but it's definitely fun to toss on after a ridiculous day at the office.

I've never listened to these guys before, but I've been aware of the name. I love me some folk metal.

I love me some folk metal.

It's not really folk metal, though.  It's more so polka-metal.  And badass :-)
