Finch, the wonderful character who is incredibly smart and ends up with Stiffler's mom..oh wait we're not talking about American Pie here. Who knows where the name Finch really came from, but it doesn't matter really as they are identified now as one of the premiere bands on Drive-Thru Records. So far it seems like there is a ton of buzz surrounding these guys and this is only their first full length. Most of it started when they released their 4 song EP last summer. Finch is 5 guys from Temecula, California ready to make a name for themselves since they have been together since the early nineties. Drive-Thru Records, most notably known for their pop punk acts such as New Found Glory, The MovieLife, and Midtown hope that Finch can live up to all the positive reviews and word of mouth advertising to move some records. They told over 6,000 copies of their first EP in just 4-5 months.

I was not impressed by their four song sampler much, as evident in my review of it, but it was just because I wasn't opening my ears to something new. So after hearing a lot of internet talk about this new album, I wasn't too sure if I wanted to really check it out..still being skeptical about the band themselves. It wasn't until I heard Jordan, the drummer for Strung Out, mention that he had been listening to it non-stop and he loved it did I really give it a chance to grow on me. So my journey to finding Finch basically ended there. I came to find a band with talent and music that I wouldn't have really expected. True its very popish, very produced, very polished, but that just in my opinion added to the record and created a great sounding cd. Lots would argue that its very mainstream, audience friendly...well I have to say it is, almost every song on 'What It Is to Burn' is catchy, in the sense that I find different songs stuck in my head all the time. So what if its radio friendly...its good music with some talent actually behind it. The choruses and the backing vocals with sometimes yelling, screaming...and other times singing along add a different element that the normal pop-punk bands dont have. Lyrically it isnt anything overly impressive, but the way the songs are written to the music keep me listening to the words trying to decode the messages about love, love lost, and other life subjects. I think I understand 'What It Is to Burn.'

Catchy riffs, backed up with superb production have this album being one of the best pop-punk albums I've heard in awhile. Mixing it up with the backup vocals and the melodies also have my ears smiling. Drive-Thru should have a winner here, if the number of EPs sold is any indication I would expect these guys to be popping up on MTV2 real soon. I think the sterotype that Drive-Thru has molded around its label does these guys injustice because they arnt just another pop-punk band, they emit something else, and thats what I like about them.
