Queens, New York’s hardcore outfit Endwell have had their fair share of ups and downs since they spawned back in 2003. There was a serious car accident on the way to play a show in hopes of getting signed, then later they get dropped from the label they nearly killed themselves for, then getting axed from a major European tour because of a complete misunderstanding, and there's also been a revolving door for a lineup. Yet after all the cards they have been dealt, they have managed to get back up, find a solid lineup, ink a deal with a new label, and are putting out their best effort to date. After a nasty split with Victory Records, Endwell have found comfort with Mediaskare Records who are releasing their new full length Consequences.

Consequences is a fresh sound for these guys. It’s faster, more aggressive, more heartfelt, and although it has become cliché to deem something in the hardcore scene “tough”, trust me, it fits the profile. Leaving the poppy sound behind, this attempt opens by way of pure inferno with the title track. Not only does this intro track have balls behind it, but it also flows effortlessly into the second track, “Weed Out The Weak”. On this particular track, vocalist Sean Murphy makes it perfectly clear that he’s pissed at most around him with lyrics like, “I'm so ******* sick of Judas friends and sell out jokes. You’re the reason that I'm livid, void of faith and hope. Please give it up pack it in the ******* hype is dead. The heart you never had will bring you down in the end.” Each track bleeds intensity and never strays too far from the path Endwell is taking us down. “As Low as a Life Gets (Jumping The Shark)” is one of several songs taken from Endwell’s EP Revenge Is A Healthy Motive, and it is another prime example of blatant disgust to everyone that has turned their back on the band.

Hardcore nowadays has become very redundant. Repetitive breakdowns, predictable two steps, and vocals that have no heart and sound like rabid dog barks. Consequences is a step in the right direction to change that, giving us a bit of old school flair. Sure there are parts of the album that may not be necessary, but it never gets monotonous. Moreover, the production quality of the album gives it every bit of respect it deserves. Every note and every word is crisp, making it a very pleasurable listen, which is not too common for hardcore albums. Adding a little bit of melody here and there is a big help too.

All in all, Endwell have found the skin they feel most comfortable in. Not only is that great for them as a band, but it’s great for us as fans. These New York tough guys have put out a hardcore album that is going to give others in the genre a run for their money in 2009. If tough as nails is what you’re looking for, do yourself a favor and buy this album.

Your review actually has me pretty anxious to get ahold of this.  Considering how much I disliked their previous stuff, I had almost completely written them off.  You may have convinced me to give them another go.

I really like this album art, I just might listen to it because of that. I'm not supposed to judge a book by its cover though.

Yea...cause hardcore and nu-metal lyrics really compare to each other. No one said the lyrics are profound, just backing up the fact that he's pissed.

So I did finally give this a listen.  Damn, you were right.  Sounds like a completely different band.  There is almost no connection, musically, to their old sound.  This is pretty straight ahead hardcore.  Not bad, not bad at all.
