The last time Ed Gein put anything out it was 2005. Judas Goats and Dieseleaters was an excellent album combining hardcore and grind into a sweet symphony, so anticipation for Bad Luck has definitely been building since then. The band was originally formed in Syracuse, NY around 2001. I remember the first time I heard of this band was by a recommendation from a friend who said they were on the Hellfest 2003 DVD and that I should check them out. As I watched their performance, their lead singer faced the drums during the whole song, but I thought these guys had something. The skill each member possessed was incredible. The first time I saw the drummer play live I was blown away. Their profile was strong and press was building for these guys in and around 2005. The tour opportunities were pouring in, and I saw these guys play with dozens of relatively big names for the time. Then all of sudden everything seemed to stop. Their media sites weren’t being updated, and besides a few touring outings, a very solid band was falling to the wayside. What I didn’t know is that a rash of bad luck had hit the band, whether it was being robbed, vans breaking down or stuff just not working out, the band was getting royally screwed. However, Ed Gein is proud to be back after their little break with a new album appropriately titled Bad Luck.

The band's new material is fast, pissed off and has no bullshit. The band has shed some of their earlier spazziness for a more raw simplicity. “Into” opens with some feedback before jumping back into what I have come to love about the band--full on riffing and trouncing drums. It has a very old school feel to it. “Wage Slave” is a departure from the feel on Judas Goats, as there is a more metallic hardcore sound pushing through. It has a steady pace and actually comes off as somewhat melodic and catchy. It is not like older material, but I dig it. “The Wraith” is more like older Ed Gein material; the vocals are chaotic and the drumming is amazing. Like most of Ed Gein’s releases there is one slower track that methodically builds into something awesome. “Bullet Doger” is that song. The charging rhythm at the end of the song is perfect. “Captain Shit” gets down to business by starting off with fast, aggressive drumming right out of the gate. The vocals are really the high point of this record. “Into the Fire” starts with an epic drum roll leading into a complex and unstoppable song. My only complaint is the song gets a little repetitive at points, but overall it is quite inventive. One of the most interesting tracks is “She Creeps,” where the different elements of metal seep out of every pore. Changing drum tempos, shouted vocals, melodic riffing, and full on grind make this the best track on the record.

This album is full of excellent songs; it shows a band that is growing from their early days of grind and becoming something less spazzy and more cohesive. Kudos to Ed Gein for putting out an incredibly well done album.

Ed Gein wasn't a serial killer though. He actually only killed two people?  He was a psychopath who heard his mothers voice in his head, telling him how he was no good and that no one could/would care about him. He also dug up the dead and wore their flesh. He had a collection of skin made baskets and bags. When the moon would come out at night, he'd pull out his skin bongo and howl at the moon. He was also a fan of having sex with the dead. Lots of movies and fictional characters loosely based on him.
