The Dropkick Murphys have built an empire on their name. Playing their brand of unique Celtic punk rock since 1996 and organizing what has become a staple in Boston around the middle of March -- their onslaught of St. Patrick’s Day back to back shows. These shows, which now span for the length of an entire week, sell out so far in advance, it's no wonder these guys are the biggest of their kind. For a decade now they have been throwing these high energy, drunken, in your face shows and this year they have released only their second live album, Live On Lansdowne. This CD/DVD combo is solid proof of why you need to experience these guys live at least once before your sorry soul expires.

This release is a little more special than their last live release due to the fact that instead of just recording one show, they recorded all the shows and picked the cream of the crop…and boy do they deliver. I found it a bit strange that to kick this album off they chose “Famous For Nothing” but after about 45 seconds my doubts were pushed aside. The live energy was immediately delivered to my ear canals and I was instantly intrigued. Next on the set list is the ever so popular “State of Massachusetts”. Just from listening to the song live, you can picture a crowd full of proud Bostonians with their fists and beers in the air singing along to every word. Let’s jump ahead a few tracks to “God Willing”. This is by far, one of the best live renditions of any song I have heard. The intensity and heart put out on this particular performance is the perfect showcase to why there is always so much unity in their music and at their shows.

With twenty tracks on the album, it’s hard not to love every second of it. However, the last six tracks are truly an amazing listen. A beautiful rendition of “The Dirty Glass” slowly moves along to “Tessie” which is more than an appropriate choice for the set list, seeing as how the venue this song was recorded at is no more than 100 feet away from the stadium that houses the Green Monster itself. Next is “Forever” which is yet another attractive performance of the studio version and always a fun live sing-along, as well as the following track “Worker’s Song”. However, if you want enjoyable sing-along songs at a DKM show, these Celtic punk veterans saved their two best for last. First is “Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced” and if you know anything about this band, you know that this could easily be considered the band’s national anthem. “Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced” is always an enjoyable performance and on the DVD you can see the stage flood with women of all ages climbing on top of each other just to be able to get their chance to sing drunkenly into the microphone. The last song thrown on this stunning live compilation is “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” which, much to the crowd’s surprise, features fellow hometown heroes The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The audience immediately explodes with energy and excitement when they see the Bosstones hit the stage and the proverbial shit hits the fan.

What more can you say say about a band that has been around and accomplished as much as the Dropkick Murphys have? They have toured, selling out venues all across the world, proving that they truly are something remarkable to witness live. It’s not an assumption about these guys anymore, it’s a proven fact. However, the St. Patrick’s Day sling of shows is the Holy Grail at the end of your punk rock pilgrimage. Take my word for it, I saw them this past St. Paddy’s day and it was something that I will forever speak of. Even if you can’t get to Boston for their Irish celebrations, get your lazy ass off your couch and go see them when they come to your town; you won’t regret it.

Man, these guys kill it at every live show they do.  I've seen 'em a couple of times (although some of those times were Warped dates, so they don't really count) and they're always great.

Find me EVERYWHERE:
