The central Illinois music scene isn’t usually where you would expect big acts to come out of, but it’s spawned the likes of The Forecast and Eagle Scout so don’t label it as a “wasteland” just yet. Dripping Slits come from Peoria and Normal, Illinois and have been playing shows for almost a year now. Their short lifespan doesn’t really mean anything though, because these guys know how to write music that will get you moving. Their debut full length, Short Skirts & Long Nights, combines the raw sound of hardcore punk with booty shaking rhythm, making it the perfect anthem to your night of partying.
Dripping Slits describe themselves as “drunk n’ roll” on their facebook page, which is a great overview of what this album encases. The eleven songs, clocking in at just under 30 minutes, provides a nice burst of energy that will get anyone in the mood to go get fucked up and have some fun. If there was a soundtrack to the best house party you’ve ever attended, this would be it. The raw screaming vocals remind me of Polar Bear Club, but the fast moving drum and bass combined with the catchy guitar riffs gives the band a sound of early The Bronx and Every Time I Die records. You could even add in the influences of The Stooges and MC5 to their raw punk sound.
The album opens with “Foreplay,” a two minute intro into the madness that is about to occur on this record. The opener leads into “Mischief,” a song built around catchy guitar riffs, something that this band excels at, shifting from fast moving chords into a raw, almost sloppy guitar solo. From there on out the rest of the album is pretty much following the same formula. While the recording and production may not be perfect, it definitely attributes to the raw sound the band has achieved.
Listening to this record is going to make you move, whether you decide to start up a circle pit or simply get out on the dance floor to shake your ass. This album can only be described as the soundtrack to a weekend of heavy drinking and nonstop partying. Pop this record in, sit back (or get up and move), and open up a beer because your night is just getting started.
