Danger Mouse is part of the genius behind Gnarls Barkley, Broken Bells, The Good the Bad and the Queen; producer of The Grey Album (a mix of an acapella version of Jay Z’s Black Album and The Beatles White Album), the last two Black Keys albums and Beck’s 2008 release Modern Guilt; and multi Grammy award winning artist and producer. Not impressed yet? Wait until you check out his latest release with Sparklehorse (which has actually been aroun since mid last year but due to EMI legal shit, has gone officially unreleased) - Dark Night of the Soul. With help from some of the best frontmen (such as Black Francis from The Pixies) and women (like Nina Persson from The Cardigans) of this and previous generations, you will soon be impressed.
Dark Night of the Soul, or La Noche Oscura Del Alma as it was written by Saint John of the Cross circa 16th century Spain, was the poem narrating the body's journey from death to its home in God’s kingdom of heaven. Personally I think the whole concept is just an elaborate fairy tale, yet one I can see enticing the focus of modern musicians. All the songs on Dark Night were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, and opener "Revenge" was made audible by psychedelia grandmaster Wayne Coyne. Although Flaming Lips lovers might stomp me in the carpark outside the Decoy office for saying it, "Revenge" could be one of his best songs to date. With a plethora of alt rock frontmen apparently at their beck and call, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse continued to choose the right men and women to lay down their already impressive lyrics. With Julian Casablancas adding to his erupting solo career with "Little Girls" and Iggy Pop claiming, "Good karma will not get you anywhere / look at Jesus and his hair," on "Pain," before fellow Broken Bells’ man James Mercer voices "Insane Lullaby" it is hard to call Dark Night out on lack of artistic direction or talent. Adding to Danger Mouse’s list of influential friends, director/artist/surrealist David Lynch steps in on the production of "Star Eyes (I Can’t Catch It)" and the album’s title track and album closer, as well as producing a 100 page photo booklet which was to accompany the original CD-R release in May of last year.
I can’t pretend to be able to listen to a song and say it is definitively Danger Mouse production, or listen to Dark Night of the Soul and comment on the particular production techniques involved song to song, but since I heard "Crazy" in high school I haven’t heard anything with a Danger Mouse signature on it I haven’t enjoyed. I also know that as "Grim Augery" plays, the last song that Vic Chesnutt ever lent his voice to, I’m experiencing, not just listening.

Nice review. It really is a fantastic album. I'm glad to see that its finally getting a release date. I found it very eerie that right before they each killed themselves Vic Chestnutt and Mark Linkous worked on "Grim Augury".

I really, really, seriously thought this album came out over a year ago because I've had it that long.
...and God saw everything that he had made and behold it was good and God created man and man created machine and machine... machine created music and machine saw everything it had created and it said - Behold!
