Not too long ago we were all introduced to the charismatic Dane Cook in Harmful If Swallowed. His highly energetic routine captivated audiences all around the globe. It wasn’t long before he was all over TV and your stereo. He had major releases such as Retaliation which took mainstream comedy to a new level. Cook was able to take something minimal and make it golden. You had plenty of acts out there, such Dave Attell, Patton Oswalt, and David Cross to name a few, who were quite known in the comedic circle but stayed back from the public limelight. If you were to look back on things, however, it seems like they might have made the best choice because once Dane hit the big screen, the hatorade was thrown at him faster than Mike Tyson hitting Robin Givens.

Cook released a few live stand-up albums over the next 3 years, but they didn’t seem to cause as much chatter compared to his previous two efforts. It seemed once Dane left the clubs and went to the arenas for his live shows, things just went downhill. On Rough Around The Edges, Dane played to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden. Seriously, that’s a major milestone in anyone’s career, but on the flip side it was probably Dane’s worst recorded performance. All you hear are screaming fans and Dane looking like he’s half-assing his way through it. Dane could have just talked in gibberish that night and people would have still eaten it up.

A year or so passed and a trailer was released for his new album, Isolated Incident. It seemed like Dane was going back to his roots: playing in smaller clubs. Fingers were crossed hoping not to hear another Vicious Circle, but instead to hear Dane back in his prime. For all the people who were hoping for this, your wish has been granted. From start to finish Isolated Incident is chock full of memorable bits that you won’t be surprised to hear the next time you are out at a bar.

Dane basically goes from talking about Obama being our new president and the racial tension between black and white people to hanging Christmas presents from your feet when you just hung yourself from a Christmas wreath. Dane even sites an old George Carlin bit when he talks about deleting contacts that have died (if you didn’t know, Dane’s mother passed away not too long ago). There’s so much more on the album from calling a girl the “C” word, looking at Sparkle Anus, and responding to one of his haters. He even does a great job at working with crowd on some of the bits.

There are going to many people who will despise this album just because it’s Dane Cook, but at the end of the day, hats off. His humor is on target and while the energy is toned down a bit, it was the right choice. In a world full of turmoil right now, there’s no better time to laugh about Twat Swatters.

Oh Chris... ya know I watched this the other night. It just confirmed my deep hatred for the man. Good review though.

Back before he got huge and his act turned into nothing more than call-backs to old jokes and odd wordery, he was actually pretty entertaining. I saw him when he was doing a college tour more than a few years ago and it was pretty entertaining.  Since then it seems like each album or special is just not that interesting.  I might give some bits on here a listen based on your review, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

I completely agree with you Rick. I think I saw him on the same tour you did at Rutgers, I took my girlfriend cause she loves him and he was alright. Bob Kelly opened and was much funnier than Dane.  I just can't stand him. I don't get the attraction.

So I guess the review wasn't that shitty then?  This was my first one in over a year.

Other than the score, not too bad :-)

I'm surprised I even rated it a 4.  I was expecting something like Vicious Circle.

It is unfortunate that this unfunny dickhole is more popular than Daniel Tosh.

I haven't heard the album but I saw him a few weeks ago where he did alot of it and I thought it was pretty good overall. It's definitely better than his past few but not as good as his earlier stuff, I'd say the review is spot on from what I"ve heard.

Ugh. Pretty sure this and the Jim Gaffigan album should have their ratings switched.

First off, the whole "going back to his roots" premise of the special is clearly disingenuous. It was obviously designed to counteract the "huge celebrity" vibes that a lot of people have been turned off by before. The tour around this special is still in arenas (a place comedy should never really be).

Secondly, the material presented really isn't all that different than his past few releases.  The same problems are still there despite him trying to take a slightly different approach to his comedy. Just like Vicious Circle, this album is lacking in actual jokes. The payoff to that five minute story about not having a condom is that he fucks her with the remote control? Really?

Dane Cook is the Nickelback of the comedy world. He's not totally awful, he's just really broad and tailors his act to appeal to widest group of people possible.

Yeah, I'll pass.

Daniel Tosh used to do this bit about the Academy Awards, and how you'd know if you won if you had an aisle seat. It was part of one of the Just For Laughs Specials early this decade, but I've never been able to find the video online. Much love to anyone who a)knows what I'm talking about b) knows if there's a stream online somewhere.

Interesting you'd bring up Tosh when discussing Cook. Tosh is certainly a better jokesmith, but his delivery and persona aren't really all that different from Cook.

And it's not like Tosh is struggling in the slightest. I'm pretty sure he performs mostly in theaters now.

Oh I know it's a gimmick, because his tour he is on now is playing huge venues.  Even so, I was happy to finally hear something I enjoyed rather than turning the channel like I did when watching "Rough Around The Edges".

I know most people don't like Cook.  So be it.  I'm not a massive fan, but I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy listening to this.  Personally, if there is any comedic album out there that deserves praise, it's Dave Attell's "Skanks For The Memories".

Their delivery is similar? Dane Cook jumps around like a retard to try and make unfunny jokes funny. Tosh doesn't need to do that. And I'm not saying Tosh is struggling, I am just saying that Tosh should be more popular than he is.

I don't know about this, but the one Cook bit I saw, the guy told jokes that were just plain unfunny.  They weren't even "jokes" really, they were just elaborate metaphors that didn't come remotely close to forcing a chuckle - the audience was laughing of course.

I've never liked Dane Cook. He got big and I liked him even less.
Jim Jefferies is 10 times funnier.
