Cipher ARE the real deal. I can only hope that this Philly based quintet are destined for great things, as with their debut EP, the group exhibit an astounding ear for the kind of abrasive yet thoroughly melodic hard rock that will appeal to both the mainstream and rockaholics alike.
The record sounds positively gargantuan, and with the help of Nashville based producers Kenny Coomer and Charlie Brocco, Cipher have crafted a rich patchwork of soaring rock and roll anthems that will leave your ears ringing and heart racing. Vocalist Jose Maldonado possesses the kind of voice that could shatter a pane of glass at a hundred paces, but in a good way. His piercing, powerful tones are truly a joy to listen to, protruding from the masses of whiny emo brats and sluggish “hardcore” screamers like a healthy waft of fresh air. The lyrics are the ideal companion for Maldonado’s dulcet tones - unequivocal, thoughtful, and beautifully phrased, the songs are replete with commentaries on universal topics, such as choices and one’s journey through life.
The musical content is more than a match for the fantastic vocals, and expediently compliments its oral brethren, with an uncomplicated but exceedingly melodic sound that packs a constantly titanic punch. Guitars competently range from crunching and boisterous, to soothing and harmonious, and backed up by an air tight rhythm section that completes a band that is thoroughly in control of their awe-inspiring, anthemic sound.
It would be effortlessly simple for me to continue singing the praises of these juggernauts of rock for another few paragraphs but frankly, I’d be wasting your valuable time, time you could be spending securing a copy of this superb EP. Welcome to Cipher’s kingdom, I hope you enjoy your stay…
