Ah yes, another deathcore record. It feels like the fastest-growing scene in metal appeared overnight, with new bands creating MySpace pages daily. Add Utah’s Chelsea Grin to that list with this, their debut full-length entitled Desolation Of Eden. A plethora of generic breakdowns? Check. Gutturals juxtaposed with high witch screams? Check. Blast beats segueing into half-time breakdowns, breakdowns, and more breakdowns? Check, check, and check. The deathcore trademarks are all here in spades, amply represented in the disc’s thirty five minute run time. For the vast majority of the album we are treated to pale clichés that have been done to death in the mere seven years or so of the genre’s fledgling existence. This is one giant chore to listen to, and it’s not the labor of love that comes with more inaccessible works. No, this is just plain torture.
As derivative as this thing is there are moments, albeit fleeting, that hint at something a bit more substantial. Basically if the group ditched the straight-jacketing adherence to the deathcore template, definitely ditched the vocalist (the vocals are so bad they threaten to single-handedly bring the whole thing down as vocalist Alex oscillates between weak gutturals and tortured-cat-in-the-vocal-booth highs), and focused more on moments like the instrumental “Elysium” (a good song marrying the heavier aspects of the group’s repertoire with melancholic melodious guitar work) or the outro to the title track, then they’d be on to something. But these moments are too few and far between. As it stands this album is probably not going to appeal to anyone beyond your standard deathcore fanatic.
I’m not sure what kind of a message Artery Recordings is trying to send with this being their first ever release, but with the recent signing of Attila as further proof I think the music community is going to be subjected to another round of bullshit from the Razor & Tie imprint. Another generic release by a band from a genre that is collapsing upon itself just as suddenly as it appeared, Chelsea Grin is going to need to do a lot better next time around, if there is a next time around, or else risk slipping into irrelevance with the rest of their contemporaries. Honestly, even by the paint-by-numbers deathcore standards this isn’t even that great.

i couldnt even get through one song before i had to turn it off.. not sure if i could even give it a rating but it was lacking any substance or anything ear catching. not even sure how bands can produce an entire album that is seriously this hard to listen to. but obviously it happens all the time.

So I listened to a couple songs again... yeah, I can't justify the 2 that I originally rated it. This is just nasty terrible.

This whole Deathcore scene blew up within the last 3-4 years and I feel as if it's already coming towards some sort of halt. Most, if not all of these types of bands are miserable.

It's crazy, Bill. Lately I've started listening to a TON of Iron Maiden and DMB and am falling head over heels in love with both bands...
...and then I woke up from that horrible nightmare and doused my ears in lysol.
