After three years of swinging hate-filled fists alongside some of hardcore’s current favorites and appearances in Alternative Press Magazine's “22 Bands Who Won’t Stay Underground For Long” and “100 Bands You Need To Know” articles, some people are beginning to grow tired of hearing the name Ceremony. To the dismay of some however, Ceremony’s Bridge Nine Records debut won’t be taking them out of the limelight any time soon.
Droning on through almost two minutes of reverberation and sludgy bass before breaking into an overwhelming state of violence, “Dead Moon California” is most definitely an indication of the maturation Ceremony endured over the past three years of consistently touring. Still Nothing Moves You showcases the band continuing maliciously along a path of destruction by incorporating a number of layers, varying tones, and ambiance to now set forth on a bleak path of complete and utter obliteration. This effort finds Justin Davis finally able to hone in on his talents as his bass guitar effortlessly thunders and booms molding every song's backbone to his liking while both guitarists crush each distorted note to bury vocalist Ross Farrar in a dissonant wall of well-structured noise. And although Farrar isn’t as prominently displayed on this record as he was on the band's previous efforts, Farrar is still capable of maintaining the same intense levels of anguish and desperation as he yells out the words he believes so strongly in.
What now separates the new Ceremony from the old are the minute long interludes as well as the mindless drone-like introductions that forge a sense of a bitter and desolate detachment from the vicious cycle, conveyed throughout the album. The actual songs here seem longer, faster, and heavier than ever before, clearly displaying that Farrar is in dire need of anger management courses after viciously belting out four rage-filled releases.
Despite all the good that Ceremony have created with Still Nothing Moves You, certain areas of the disc seem to drag on incessantly taking away from the bands energy, thus making the disc rather difficult to listen to on a consistent basis. In spite of these few faults, Still Nothing Moves You is a huge step forward in showing that even the “stiffest” of genres have the capability of bending without breaking.
