The first thing you need to know about this band is that they are not just another metalcore band. These guys have been doing metalcore since 1997. This German quintet has been around the block a few times too. With 3 records and a split with Heaven Shall Burn under their belts, they’re no strangers to the recording process.
With their fourth LP, Caliban have only solidified their sound. “The Opposite from Within” exudes heaviness, oozes power riffs, and bleeds double bass. All this and you still find some melody laced within each song. The lead of track, “The Beloved and the Hatred” along with “Senseless Fight,” and “Goodbye” will give you a great impression of their heavy and melodic sound. It will be interesting to see if these guys can turn this piece of work into something that sells given the current metal/metalcore/hardcore industry. They could just get washed away in the ocean of other similar sounding acts, or they could ride the crest of the wave. Either way, they’re worth at least checking out.
If you like the current metalcore sound, you’re probably already going to pick this up. If you’re not a metalcore fan, this isn’t anything breakout from the genre so you could probably pass on it.
