Metalcore nowadays has become the coolest thing since sliced bread. Every long-haired, tight jean wearing scenester thinks they can pick up an instrument, get some tattoos and be the next big thing in a scene that is full of overrated has-beens and never-will-be’s. Bring Me The Horizon, however, is lucky enough to be a part of both of the above mentioned categories. To some of the young bucks they may already be has-beens because some newer and trendier ensemble of musical retards has graced the music industry with their presence. Conversely, to the old heads, these five jabronis are simply making a mockery of what was once an amazing scene held together by talented musicians that actually gave a shit about what they did. Every fashionable idea that I have already had about this band is held together by their latest, long winded release, There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret.
There Is A…(ton more words in this exaggerated title left) is everything that is wrong with metalcore today. To start, the album feels very rushed to me. The vocals are all over the place, the drums seem off-time at all the wrong times and, to be completely honest, the band is more of a screamo band now than anything that resembles a metalcore band. “Crucify Me,” the album opener, starts with what sounds like a semi-promising intro… then when you’re about a minute into the track you realize you were just getting a little ahead of yourself. There is WAY too much going on in this song. Being talented does not mean trying to add a ton of bullshit layers, it means displaying what you have been naturally gifted with. Also, trying to put in some angelic sounding synth-riffs from hottie Lights doesn’t help the musical confusion either. To help me get through the track, I sit and picture Lights wearing a bikini while running towards me on the beach, anticipating my embrace.
“Anthem” and the intelligently titled track “Fuck” are nothing more than excuses to curse a lot. “Anthem” might actually be the only track on the album, however, that is semi-manageable to get through. There are some civilly catchy riffs in it but nothing to get moist over. “Fuck,” which apparently is a single off the album, is actually the worst track on the album. “Fuck” is certainly an appropriate title, though, because it’s nothing short of a cluster-fuck. I’m really having a hard time grasping the band’s innate need for being sporadic. Also, the guest vocals don’t help push the envelope of awsomeness either. You Me at Six front man, Josh Franceschi lends his vocal chords, yet it doesn’t seem to help much. To continue on the path of guest vocals, my wife, Lights, makes yet another appearance on “Don’t Go.” “Don’t Go” is an addition to the whole “let’s add a ton of layers to sound talented” mindset the band has procured. “Alligator Blood” is another track that seems promising due to some catchy riffs but nevertheless still falls short of being an all around enjoyable track.
From everything I have read on this album, it seems as though the general consensus is people trying to explicitly point out that this release is a step up from their previous material. Well, I definitely disagree with this, but if I were to say anything positive about this band and the record they just released, it would be about their newest addition to the band, guitarist Jona Weinhofen. Jona has built quite a name for himself, yet most of the imbeciles who listen to BMTH fail to realize that. He was the main talent behind I Killed The Prom Queen and also played in Bleeding Through for almost two years. Other than being a well established musician, he also dabbled in managing bands, one of them being fellow Australian natives The Red Shore. So if there is anything that makes this album the slightest bit enjoyable, it would be because of Mr. Weinhofen.
Honestly, it’s not the band's shitty scenester image that turns me off, nor is it the fact that front man Oli Sykes tries to be like R. Kelly, it’s as simple as this: they just aren’t that good. They are a mediocre band (at best) that tries to fatten their sound with sporadic instrumentation to make them seem like they are progressing. The only thing that progressed with this album is my distaste for them. Call this a biased review, call it a long-winded explanation of why I think the album sucks, call it whatever you want -- I could care less. The fact of the matter is that I work for Decoy and as a diligent worker for said website, it is my job to voice my analysis of this high profile album. My opinion on this album is that it simply sucks. The. End.

All of those bands Jona Weinhofen's played in suck... I still haven't listened to this one, but I'm sure I'll get around to it.

Idk never been a fan of IKTPQ and especially not of the Red Shore. As far as bands with merit, I think that's a big ole can of worms... I think unless we're talking Brokencyde, every band has some kind of merit, no matter how much you don't like them. I haven't listened to this album so I can't comment on it, but I am familiar with their previous work and their last record honestly wasn't that bad.

If they're more a screamo band, then how can this album be all that is wrong with metalcore today? That would mean that all that is wrong with metalcore is that all the metalcore bands are screamo bands.
And yeah, what was really lacking from Dylan's review was some objectification of women. Thanks for that.
Those nitpicks aside, however, this is really well-written and has great voice.

good review haha, always nice to hear other opinions (in the form of reviews) on an album.
like i said in the other post, this album is fading from my playlist. i've probably only listened to it once this week, if that. in hindsight, i probably shouldn't have given it a five, especially because it got old so fast.

Because they're still being justified as a metalcore band! They were on their last album, but not now... Now they are a screamo band. Sheep in wolves clothing if you may. It would be like... a soccer player trying to play hockey for a season... just does not work.

Based on the album title, RIYL, and album cover, I could tell this was going to be garbage. The review did, however, get me to look up Lights... damn

So, on one hand you have a band trying to explore new grounds (hopefully) and on the other, the same band failing miserably. It's not as if the album it's bad or not, it's the awfully calculated scene image they're still chasing what really bothers me (predictable as fuck, and consequently, their music suffers). But don't get me wrong, imagine a scenario where the Jonas Brothers decide they want to start playing any kind of metal, if it's any good I'd listen, because as I grow older I tend to not give a fuck about a band's look as I did back when I was 14 and decided to let my hair grow because Kevin Martin and Jerry Cantrell looked fucking awesome rocking the stage with long hair. But with their oh so obvious song names, album title, scene clothes and every bit of their band existence screaming "metal guys circa late 00's", well, to me they're just some ordinary guys with average musical abilities, pretending to be bad asses so 16 year old girls pretending to be unique, will buy their records. They should stick to water sports which I heard one of the guys it's pretty good at.

Explain to me why Letlive gets 5 stars from you and this gets 1 1/2? They both feature screaming, spastic instrumentation, and no originality. Im not trying to pick a fight just a question as to why a somewhat generic band like Letlive gets 5 stars and this gets 1 1/2. Musically I feel like they both have the same amount of skill when it comes to playing their instruments...playing fast and distorted. I'll give you the fact that Letlive's vocalist has a somewhat unique voice (if you pretend bands like glassjaw, Lower Definition or other post-hardcore bands dont exist). Thats why I feel that their image has a lot more to do with you not liking them then you would like to lead on.
Id like anyone to explain to me how a band like Letlive is awesome and one of the best albums of the year for some and Bring me the Horizon is considered the worst plague to hit the scene since Hawthorne Heights. Is it song structure that puts them on opposite sides of the spectrum? Is it the lyrical content that makes them so different (even though you didn't mention the generic lyrics in your review once)? Or do you believe that the dissonant chords played by Letlive are so much better then BMTHs noise?
On a side note I do like letlive better then BMTH I just wanted to hear your guys justification for why they are so different if it has nothing to do with image. andactually yes...I did write this to start an internet fight with you guys...hit me with your best shot!

I don't really know how to respond, Thuggin, because to me Letlive and BMTH are in two different genres. They don't sound anything similar to me. Letlive are jumping around in the sub-genres of post-hardcore while BMTH are strictly metalcore (sorry, Bill, I don't hear much screamo (in the classical sense of the genre) in these guys).
Your argument is not very strong, really, since you're comparing a couple very general traits of the bands. It's like me saying Atmosphere and 50 Cent are basically the same since they rhyme words over beats. The two are in very different respective sub-genres of hip-hop, just like Letlive and BMTH are in different sub-genres of rock.

Ok first, let explain the screamo statement. In my eyes, this band is not 100% metalcore anymore. They aren't BR00T@l, there aren't a ton of generic breakdowns anymore (just generic everything else). I cant see these guys playing with bands like As I Lay Dying or August Burns Red anymore... maybe, The Used or like... A Static Lullaby (haha), but not "heavy-hitters" in the genre of metalcore anymore. SORRY! It's just how I see shit! But I'm also an asshole when it comes to music.
Bands like BMTH bother the shit out. Sure it's partially because of their image. Your image is portrayed through your music. You don't see BLOOD FOR BLOOD running around with flowers in their ears do you? Shit just wouldn't be right. Put out a shitty image and get a shitty sound.
Rick hit the nail on the head, man. You cant sit back and say "oh well they both play basic chord progressions in distortion... so they're almost identical!" C'mon man. Really? That's a very broad statement to make. EVERYONE plays simple shit in distortion...Nickelback even does! Are you going to put them in the same realm as this awful band and letlive????
letlive, in MY opinion are way more musically talented than these idiots. The drum work alone is proof that as musicians, they are far superior. You can't compare my review on one album to another, dude. Look through my catalog. I gave Saving Grace a 1/5 yet handed Death Before Dishonor a 4/5. Both bands are beat down hardcore... once just happens to do it a lot better than the other.
Dylan admitted that he barely listens to this album anymore and he gave the effin thing 5/5. Aaron was jocking this album too and even said he doesn't really listen to it much anymore... AND IT JUST CAME OUT! I guarantee you though, that Aaron is still spinning letlive's album. Honestly, BMTH is lucky I even gave them the rating I did.

Bill, I think the confusion with your screamo comment is that traditional screamo, before all these retarded bands started coming on the scene, is from bands like Neil Perry, Joshua Fit for Battle, and the like. Some people think you're referring to the modern incarnation of the term, while others are probably confused and think you mean it in the traditional sense, which I'm assuming you don't. If my assumption is wrong though, then I have to disagree, because I don't hear the similarities either to traditional screamo.
This album is really a shame because it has the potential to be great. BMTH is at least trying to do something different though in the metalcore world with their more chaotic approach, but I agree that it failed for the most part. The vocals are way too much to handle, and the singer needs to take a break more often and let the music shine. And while the drummer is very talented in a technical sense, he tries to do way too much and it ends making the song sloppy. I'd venture to say he's probably more skillful than the letlive drummer, but the letlive drummer knows how to write great drum parts, while BMTH tries too hard and changes it up too often.
There is a lot of boring metalcore out there nowadays, very paint by numbers. People jocked the shit of the new Parkway Drive album but it was montonous to me, and I like that BMTH has a lot going on in there songs - it makes for a more interesting listen. It's not well executed though and that's ultimately the problem. I don't think it deserves a 5/5, but I don't think it deserves a 1.5/5 either, if for no other reason than at least they're trying to standout (even though their image is really irritating.)

Nah Nick, you got it man. I'm talking about the "retarded bands"...
I feel the problem with this band is they are trying too hard. Too many unnecessary layers. Having your music all over the place is great, if you can pull it off. Look at Dillinger! Mother Effers were all over the damn place, and they made it work.
And yes Nick, your point about how the vocals need to let the music shine is major factor of why everything sounds liek a cluster fuck.
amen to that.

I had never listened to BMTH until this album and i'll agree that I cant quite figure out what genre they are because this doesn't sound like metalcore. Though to me it kinda sounds like a real "Brootal" vocalist singing karaoke over the last Underoath album. I think the singer from BMTH sounds good in parts but after a couple songs its just grating to the ears.
But to me BMTH does not really sound chaotic in the traditional sense since for one they rarely step out of 4/4. Maybe it just sounds messy since the singer cant keep his trap shut for more than a few seconds. But saying their is too many unnecessary layers? To me if you really look at each individual track it is usually one rhythm guitar, one guitar that plays a lead or two during the chorus, bass, drums, a keyboard player who comes out of nowhere on certain tracks, and then there is Oli. The only parts that could be deemed unnecessary would be the keyboard or vocals in spot since everything else is the bare minimum for a "brootal band starter kit."
And yes if you play simple shit I am going to put you in the same realm. You still need something that makes you stand out. I feel like BMTH has nothing that makes it stand out to me but in a generic sense it is good at what it does so I would give it a 2.5/5.
Letlive i feel is similar to BMTH because they both play safe music in their standing genres but have a vocalist that their fans find original for their scene. I enjoy post-hardcore bands more than whatever you would call BMTH so I would give Letlive a 3 or 3.5. But I also cant take the vocalist from Letlive after a while.
