With two of the most powerful heavy records so far this year - Irepress’s Sol Eye Sea I and Battlefields’s Thresholds of Imbalance, Translation Loss is a record label that is making a name for themselves among the elite metal circle. Helping them forge their way ahead even more is sludgy stoner outfit Bloodhorse and their debut full-length Horizoner.

Like those previous two Translation Loss releases that I mentioned, Horizoner starts out with a long track – in this case, it is four seconds away from hitting the ten minute mark. A significant cut of those ten minutes are used to build up – quite epically I will add – to the rest of the track. It serves the purpose of an intro track as well as the first song. Once you get through that build up, which you may or may not find too long depending on if you’re a fan of doomy stoner metal, you are treated to a strong opening number that paves the way for some of the best sludgy jams you’re going to hear all year. The tag-team punch of “A Passing Thought to the Contrary” and the track Horizoner will be remembered for, “The Old Man”, will be heaven for fans of the bong. The mostly instrumental “Nonhossono” provides a nice transition into the faster and punkier numbers “Close, But Never So” and “Aphoristic”.

Fans of the opening track, “A Good Son”, will undoubtedly enjoy “The Morning Burial”, the majority of which builds from the catchy introduction to the heavy and wonderfully repetitious ending. “Paranoiac” is the weakest track on the album. While the music is strong and forceful, the vocals feel out of place most of the time, mainly due to the less triumphant sounding delivery that you get used to on the rest of the disc. The album finishes with “In Horror”, a track that once again utilizes the build-up,  in a louder way this time, like some of the other tracks mentioned previously. It is one of the strongest tracks on the album and is a fitting conclusion for this mammoth-sized album.

Horizoner should put Bloodhorse among the top stoner acts around today, while Translation Loss is simultaneously working their way to the top of the heavy music label hierarchy. Quite simply, Translation Loss and Bloodhorse have come up with a winner.
