BreakSilence Recordings has to be playing a practical joke on music fans everywhere with the albums they’ve been putting out the past few years; it’s hard to fathom that anyone would seriously fund the god awful bands on their roster. The label that brought us horrendous acts such as Eyes Set to Kill and the notorious Brokencyde, have once again raised the bar for mind-numbing and vomit-inducing music with the release of Black Sunshine’s self titled debut.
Black Sunshine’s biography notes that the band is the “brainchild” of Matt Reardon, a once prominent free skier. Well, this brainchild of his is missing a few chromosomes because it was difficult to get through the first minute of the first song, let alone the entire album. Reardon started Black Sunshine after suffering from a career ending skiing injury, but the real shame here is that he didn’t injure his vocal chords or lose an arm, because either one of those scenarios could have prevented him from starting this band. If you’re wondering what the music sounds like, imagine if Nickelback and Shinedown were a brother and sister couple that had an incestuous child who was hit by a car and paralyzed from the waste up... then given a guitar and told to write music.
If you’ve heard one hard rock band, you’ve heard them all, so there’s little need to go through the typical rundown of this album’s songs. Instead, here are some excerpts from the lyrics to help you better understand the awfulness that is Black Sunshine. You’ll notice that, for the most part, Reardon basically took phrases that he thought sounded cool and tried to mash them together in order to form coherent songs.
From the song “Tears:” “Have you ever heard the sound of an angel cry / It’s like a thousand hurricanes ripping through your life / Love lost, such a cost, so the young man said / I would rip off all my limbs and I would bring back the dead.”
From the appropriately titled “Hell Yeah:” “Hell yeah, riding dirty tonight / Hell yeah, you know she drives it right / When she’s on her knees, dirty as can be / Hell yeah, I said she’s the American dream.”
From “Psycho Babble:” “Colossal time warp, another trend / When it’s over, would you be my friend / One man’s pleasure is another man’s pain / God Damnit girl, you make me insane / Same old story, again and again.”
I think you get the idea.
This band is the incarnation of the failed hopes and dreams of a D-list celebrity and exemplifies the definition of “jock rock.” Moreover, there is absolutely nothing to like about this album; the music is beyond redundant, the lyrics are laughable, and even the cover art is a joke. We get it, your name is Black Sunshine, it’s not necessary to put a black sun on your album cover to remind us of it. Perhaps, one day we can live in a world where bands like this don’t exist, but until then, let’s just do our best to ignore them.

I'm starting to get on-board with radio rock bullshit but this is god awful.
That sounds more like a Hinder / Nickelback inbred.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this review
Too old to bother, too young to give a shit.
Cincinnati
I especially enjoyed this part "but the real shame here is that he didn’t injure his vocal chords or lose an arm".
haha...good stuff

Haha, glad you guys are enjoying it. At least albums like this can be used for our entertainment.

Not gonna lie... the lyrics are enjoyable.
Not gonna lie, I find that reprimandable.

It is sad when the current radio-rock bands are so bad, they create feelings of nostalgia for Creed.

They make Godsmack look edgy.
But like I said a couple of weeks ago, if you're looking for GREAT radio-rock bands listen to 32 Leaves and 10 Years.
And I swear to God, some of those lyrics look like they were pulled from my "notes book" when I was in 8th grade. And if the band name has been copied from the White Zombie song, what a shame.

Good radio rock band is Dead Letter Circus.

I haven't heard this album so I can't comment on the "band," but Matt Reardon is still skiing professionally and I've seen him play live, acoustically...he's actually very talented. Kudos to him for living his life to the fullest! I admire, and am inspired by people who keep going, even in the face of criticism.
I agree with scottlandj, I saw these guys live in Ft. Myers Fl. when they opened up for Alice in Chains and I thought they were great. It sounds like the reviewer has an issue with the label and no matter what the music sounds like he is gonna hate it. To each his own I guess, but I personally enjoyed this album and will go see these guys again if they come around.

Heh, this band is terrible and everyone agrees except for the two band shills who signed up only to try to make it look like people think this album is any good.

Hahaha, oh god, here come the fanboys to stick up to their beloved, shitty band. If Reardon wants to write music and be in a band, that's his life choice, my life choice is to dislike his horrible music and tell that to the world publicly. And I'm not biased against labels, just simply pointing out the fact that this particular one puts out a lot of bad albums, and Black Sunshine helps to continue to that trend.
