Beyond the Embrace come back with their sophomore effort on Metal Blade records. Insect Song, with Ken Susi at the helm, is a ferocious blend of retro metal riffing and melody. How many albums could that describe? The answer is too many. While, Beyond the Embrace are extremely talented at what they do, this melodic metal bag has been beat to death. While the band may have matured and honed their skills a great deal since their debut, it is merely a sparkle in the vastness of metal today.
Throaty screams surrounded with clean sung vocals are featured on every track. Mix in 3 layers of technical guitar work and some pounding bass and drums, and you’ve got the essence of Beyond the Embrace. Add the occasional double bass kick and chugging riff and that about describes it all. I hate to say it but it’s almost too formulaic.
Metalcore these days is either hit or miss. What sticks is an answer that I’m sure many record companies would love to find out. Unfortunately, they keep tossing crap at the wall hoping it will stick. Like I’ve already said, Beyond the Embrace are extremely talented. A few years ago, this record would’ve been quite experimental, but today, the market is just not big enough for every one.
