Talk about intense! Between the Buried and Me, North Carolina'smost brutal metal band, shed more blood and tears on their second album (and first for Victory) The Silent Circus than most bands do throughout their entire career. Effortlessly mixing death metal, progressive rock, and hardcore, The Silent Circus is a can't miss affair -- whether it be slamming out insane speed metal concoctions or beautiful acoustic melodies, it never seems to falter or stumble.
To get a better idea of what this band has to offer, imagine combining the songwriting capability of old Shai Hulud, the speed-metal repertoire of Slayer, and vocals straight from Lucifer himself. This band is as convincing as any when it comes down to it -- they may have little experience, but what they lack in being in it for the long haul they more than make up with vibrant, youthful energy.
The Silent Circus only stops crushing skulls a few times throughout the album, but when they do, you almost wish they indulged more often; their beautifully crafted acoustic tunes are the perfect counter to their insanely technical metal. It almost sounds like the band is feeling remorse for providing the perfect soundtrack for a bloody murder (or several), but in reality, the band is just giving you a breather and a chance to clean up some of the evidence, and then it's off to the races again.
Bottom Line: Between the Buried and Me have done it again! The Silent Circus is a beautifully constructed album overall and an excellent follow-up to their amazing debut. If you're a fan of heavy music, especially speed metal with a very modern twist, this is the album for you. But if you're looking for the next metalcore classic -- look elsewhere. This album is most likely only going to be treasured by a small amount of people, but that's only because most fans of music (including heavy metal) won't understand the beauty of this record, especially at first glance. In time, "The Silent Circus" should be up in ranks with some of the best of the best -- but for now, it's just a damn good way to spend an hour.
