Bayside's third release on Victory Records, Acoustic, is a stripped down, ten track album that includes songs from both of their studio albums as well as two previously unreleased tracks and two cover songs. The concept behind this album was born when bassist Nick Ghanbarian was left in serious condition and drummer John "Beatz" Holohan was killed as a result of a tragic van accident in late October 2005 while in transit between dates of the Never Sleep Again Tour. Bayside played the remainder of the tour with labelmates Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, and Aiden with just guitarist/lead vocalist Anthony Raneri and lead guitarist Jack O'Shea playing acoustically.
The two cover tracks include an acoustic version of "Megan" by their labelmates and influences The Smoking Popes that features Josh Caterer as a guest vocalist and a very respectable cover of Elliott Smith's "Baby Britain" that was recorded before the van accident and features all four members of Bayside as does the unreleased track "Paternal Reversal", a really kickass song. However, the bulk of the album is just Raneri and O'Shea each armed with an acoustic guitar and doing acoustic renditions of songs recorded during better times. Of the tracks done in this manner, two stand out to be very good. The lead-off track of the album, titled "Winter", is a very heartfelt and touching tribute to Beatz and the deep friendship shared between the members of Bayside. The other being an acoustic version of the bands first single off their self-titled 2005 release titled "Devotion and Desire", which translates very well to an acoustic style. As for the rest of the acoustic songs, they tend to be hit and miss, tracks like "Blame It On Bad Luck" and "Masterpiece" are acceptable, while "Montauk" and "They Looked Like Strong Hands" are stale.
This album has some solid high points in its short 39 minute length, but it's the uninteresting, dull lows that keep it from being truly memorable.

nah, "winter" is actually a pretty solid song IMO, but this disc is not that great. outside of that song, I couldn't get into much of this album.

for some reason i think their leaving for the majors and just put this out to get out of their contract with victory quicker. seems weird and quick to do this. i still want to get it.
