The female fronted “chick rock” genre has been taking over the music scene pretty rapidly ever since Paramore got big. With other female fronted bands having been getting progressively bigger (with both Hey Monday and Versaemerge getting set to release new albums this summer), it seems like more and more similar bands are popping up out of nowhere. Automatic Loveletter has been gaining momentum off of one EP that went through several re-releases, a guest spot in All Time Low's “Remembering Sunday”, and signing a contract with Sony BMG. The band has a fair share of fans after plenty of touring including Bamboozle and Warped Tour, so it's safe to say that this band is almost an underground sensation. Truth Or Dare is the band's first full-length and their major label debut, but how does it stack up against other female fronted groups?
Vocalist Juliett Simms shines in this album with both emotion and great vocal styling. Compared to other singers in their genre, she has a very recognizable style and not-so-perfect tone. Her sharp vocals really give the band their distinctness, being both nasally and rough, but still providing a pleasant sound. Every song is a vocal work of art for her, constantly changing her tone to hold your interest. As far as the band's work musically, they really just do their jobs as a background band for Simms' vocals. While somewhat dull at times, the band is decent at making good backing tracks. Songs like “Story Of My Life” and “Don't Let Me Down” are prime examples of this. Automatic Loveletter is still catchy and very radio-friendly, though.
The album is decent as a whole, but all of the tracks are pretty much following the same pop genre formula. While this band might be the next big thing, they honestly are not that great musically. Juliett Simms is a terrific vocalist and she may be the next big, recognizable female vocalist in the female fronted rock genre, but this album is nothing special. Take one listen and see how you feel about it; it's a pretty decent listen if you are into the genre. Don't be surprised if you start hearing this band on the radio, but unfortunately this album only has a few good single tracks for them.

This sort of reminds me of a combination of theStart and modern radio rock. It's not bad, but I definitely agree with you that Simms vocals are great (raspy, sometimes out of tune, and straining... not something you'd expect in this genre) and the underlying music is pretty basic and uninteresting.

i'm going to have to agree with you. three releases of the same ep seems kind of ridiculous. i saw them back on warped 2008 and thought they had some pretty good momentum. hopefully that turns around though, as it does for some bands.

I have to disagree timothy. It is only natural for an artist to pull out all the stops in order to create a successful music career, and those stops aren't easy. I just read an interview with Juliet in which she says that it has been a "long road" and she is "hoping that perseverance pays off." She comes across as a very strong, driven individual who evidently has grown and matured into an artist with "Truth and Dare" as the result. I think it is an amazing display of courage and this album is pretty rock solid. I can't wait to see them play at Warped! Kick some bum ALL!

Not bad at all, definitely dig her vocals just not sure about the musicianship of her band. I know her brother was in the band and that he's a good writer so maybe he isnt anymore ? Either way good exposure for her when she toured with Craig Owens solo tour

I definitely find her voice unique but find the music behind her lacking in all departments. I remember when company of thieves came out with their album, which is another female fronted rock band with a unique voice, and I found their musicianship to be actually well thought out at parts. With Automatic Loveletter they could of replaced all the music with electronic blips and it wouldn't make any difference. But in the end 80% of mainstream music has just as simpleinstrumentation as this so that will not hold them back from getting bigger in the end.
