Home is the title of the new performance / documentary DVD by metalcore giants August Burns Red. Filmed earlier this year, it follows the group on the road for a few months and captures a sold-out show in their hometown of Manheim, Pennsylvania to a warehouse full of fans. Hoping to offer some insight into the way the band functions, the DVD tackles just about every aspect of the group and aims to please all fans of the band.

The live portion of the DVD is very well done, with every angle of the performance captured and displayed accurately. Each member of the band is spot on, and the audio is mixed so well that I honestly prefer it to Constellations in some parts. Easily one of the most important portions of a live show, the set list combines 15 great tracks spanning each album and even includes the epic closer to Thrill Seeker, “The Seventh Trumpet.” There's something for everyone throughout this performance. As for the quality of the performance itself, the only complaint to be had is that vocalist Jake Luhrs seems to have a tough time keeping his breath at times. When you take into consideration that the performance for the audience comes first, however, it ends up evening out. Thankfully, bassist Dustin Davidson really holds his own; the layered vocals always come out spot-on throughout each instance, and the growl of his bass peeks through in all the right places. The camera work for the performance is also expertly done. Angles and focuses change constantly, but they are always smoothly transitioned and members who need the spotlight get it. It's pretty obvious that this isn't a second rate job as the cinematography overall helps the band's performance translate well to a television screen. Space Monkey Studios made sure that nothing was lost between the band and the cameras.

The second half of the DVD, the documentary entitled “Away Games” is a great look into the band's history, tour life, and how things work behind the scenes. The cameras follow the band on their spring 2010 tour throughout the US with A Day to Remember, catching them enjoying themselves before shows and how they handle life on the road. Scenes of fans talking about how the band has influenced their lives and how much the band appreciates the support are interjected between tour stops to round out the feature. The band's genuine attitude toward their fans shines through, and that's very refreshing to see.

Overall this release is very well done and a must have for any August Burns Red fan. The documentary is a great look into the band, and the performance is perfectly executed. Home is a step in the right direction for the band, and if it has done one thing, it has made me want to see this band live even more. If you're looking to break up the monotony in between albums and want an enjoyable live experience from your couch, Home is the way to go.

I'm pretty sure my opinion about this band has been made enough on this website...

I didn't watch the DVD, but I listened to the CD and I was unimpressed. They sounded decent enough, but you're definitely right about Jake's vocals.  He was the weak point of this album. He's just not commanding enough of a frontman, at least listening to this.

live dvd's of music and genre's like this are good, but cd's are pointless.

Rick, I felt the same about the CD, but the DVD really makes up for it. I'm not sure whether it's Jake's mic placement or himself, but something was definitely off. Either way, I really enjoyed this. It's only $14, by the way- A great price for a live DVD.

Also, if anyone does get the DVD, the tiny shot of a Waffle House in the first montage is from my hometown of Hillsborough, NC. That really blew me and my friend's minds, hahaha. I've spent way too much time in that place.
