There’s no introduction needed for As I lay Dying… but I’ll give one anyways since I need to fill up some space in this review's intro. Much is to be said about a metalcore band that has been around for ten years and have managed to remain relevant the entire time. These dudes have set a bar in their said genre and many have since failed trying to meet their standard. I suppose such a thing is difficult when you’re chasing after a band that’s been nominated for a Grammy. Anyhow, there’s no denying that AILD is force to be reckoned with in the scene of all things melodically heavy. So what’s the latest from these headbangers for Christ? Just like Jesus, they are giving their followers a gift. That’s right! Twelve tracks comprised of new material, covers and some remixed throwback jams that will definitely satisfy the needs of longtime AILD fans.

Let's start off with the new tracks. “Paralyzed” is a shredtatstic ensemble. Immediately it fills your ears with the sounds of melody and brutality that ALID have become known for over the last decade. Finger lickin’ good solos, unforgiving guitars that can barely be carried by a forklift, and relentless drums are the key ingredients of this track. Honestly, though, all three of the new tracks fit into this description; “Paralyzed” is just the catalyst. Before I dig any deeper into this review it should be noted that Tim’s vocals are the best they have ever sounded. “From Shapeless to Breakable” hosts a less melodic sound as it is heavier, quicker and has more blast beats than most AILD songs. “Moving Forward” does exactly what its title indicates. This track is a major step forward for AILD as it’s more melodic and has very little screaming. The hard rock radio stations should be greeting this track with open arms any day now.

Now as far as the covers go, they’re pretty solid. When you’re playing music originally written by Slayer, Judas Priest and Descendents, it’s a difficult task to match the same epicness that they did on the originals. However, this is AILD we’re talking about here, not your local bar band. Not only do they play each song with the same integrity that they were written with, but they do it with As I Lay Dying style. The remix section on the album is a horse of a different color, however. Not one aspect of those remixed songs is intriguing. It’s a giant cluster fuck. But, that’s where music is headed nowadays, so you can’t really hate the player… hate the game.

The three new tracks are what really carry this album above the bullshit that is the “remix section.” If not for anything else, I suggest getting this just to hear the new tracks… or wait until they’re all uploaded on Youtube and then just stream the hell out of them. Hopefully As I Lay Dying are planning on releasing a full length with all new material on it some time soon because I don’t think another album with a bunch of filler nonsense will make the cut.

Everything but the 3 new tracks on this album sucks. But the new songs are extremely good.

There never was nor will there ever been anything remotely good about this band. These covers are disgusting and the original songs sound just like the rest of their shitty asshole music.

Everything this band has ever released is the epitome of generic. This band is beyond awful. I hate them even more than before when I found out the lead singer did the engineering for the last Zao record, he used the same shitty and "slick" production values on it as he does with his own band. I hope they flip their van and die in a fire.

I've never understood why people hate this band so much. They're not talent-less, they seem to genuinely try at what they're doing, and they don't seem gimmicky.  I guess I don't see a reason why there is so much hate. I can understand why you might not want to listen to them, but the outright detesting of them puzzles me. Is it maybe because they're trendy?

I'm with Rick on this one.  I totally understand why people don't "get" or like them, but they have always stayed one step ahead of the rest of the pile in the metalcore scene.  Hell, their recent material is much more thrash-influenced melodeath b/c of the lack of breakdowns.

Well put Nick, I am on your team as well on this topic. I am curious to what metalcore bands the haters of AILD are into? Or maybe they just dislike the entire genre, because to me these guys are in the top 80% of metalcore bands. I haven't listened to the new album yet, and honestly I only really care to hear the 3 original songs, as I cannot get into the remix garbage that seems to be the trend these days. I really do 'hate the game' as Bill states in his review.

While I'm indifferent to this band and probably don't want Tim Lambesis to die, I agree with you about his work on the last Zao album. It really took a lot of the character out of it. I hope they don't work with him again...if they ever get another album together.
Also, since we're arguing about Deftones in the other thread, have you heard about how Liberate was supposedly a big inspiration for White Pony? That's gotta be good for at least a decimal's ammount of brownie points, right?

Thanks Buck, yeah I hold them pretty high on the list of non-progressive metalcore.  Also these remixes are just OK.  I don't hate the game b/c I really dig electronic music, but metal remixes are more miss than hit with me.

It's hard to deny An Ocean Between Us as between anything short of an amazing album in all respects to the genre. Another album that probably gets shit coming out around the same time as An Ocean Between Us is Killswitch Engage's As Daylight Dies. Both my favorite albums from these artists. Do any of of the AILD haters like Killswitch Engage? If so we have ourselves a contradiction or just go ahead and say that you don't like the genre.

Yeah I love both of those albums, and can see what you're saying.  I also think they are great albums to introduce people into heavier music.

Agree, I might add, introducing people into heavier music with screaming/harsher vocals, not just the heavy 'music' which seems to be what drives everyone away from it. At least all the people I know who can't accept it, they always say, "they are just screaming or shouting, I can't understand what they are saying."

Those albums are a little more accessible, but then again, those people will never understand how you can like music with vocals any other than Carrie Underwood esque vocals. And no, I did not catch the CMAs last night, Damnit!!

No, They don't introduce people to heavier music. They insult talented musicians who make "heavy music". Its sort of in the same vein of bands like Brokencyde. At least this is how I used to feel. Nowadays, I could give a fuckless. These guys will always be trash. Lots of people who like forms of heavier metal, hate this cookie cutter trash and I totally understand why'd they want to see this guys get their knees broken. They write the same four riffs, insert breakdown, screaming, some shitty clean vocals about some over dramatic bullshit, blah blah, end track.

I'm not sure if you know how to read or not but 100% love! Me and Dylan had a session where we sat there and broke down each track off of every CD. BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!

maybe their earlier cds they had more breakdowns, but they cut it down especially on the last cd.  Only reason they are even called metalcore is because of their earlier stuff.

Righteous! Glad you guys are finally putting aside your differences and bonding. Since you mentioned Brokencyde, will you guys do a breakdown of them next? We haven't been talking about them much lately, at least not enough for me. Maybe As I Lay Dying and Brokencyde could do a mash up...
200 % LOVE!!!
Also, where is that knee cap smashing hammer?
