When Tom DeLonge announced the conception of Angels and Airwaves he cristened their work "The best music made in decades" and talked of "Epic songs well over six minutes in length and an album of 65-75 minutes" . With their debut album clocking in at 50:10 and only one song over six minutes, this album falls short on all accounts.

Angels and Airwaves is assembled of musicians from bands we have all heard of: Tom DeLonge, vocals/guitar (Blink 182, Boxcar Racer); David Kennedy, guitar (Hazen St./Boxcar Racer); Ryan Sinn, bass (The Distillers); and Atom Willard, drums (The Offspring). The album leads off with "Valkyrie Missle", a slow starter that features a 2:40 long insturmental intro that includes cosmic astronaut sound effects and it really lost my attention through all that. The album recovered slightly with "It Hurts" which has been made a single, and rightfully so as it has the best selling potential of any song on this album. Another bright spot of this album is the song "A Little's Enough", a ballad of sorts that becomes more uptempo and maintains interest throughout. Perhaps the best track on the album is titled "The Adventure", the lone track that I found to be actually flooring it and truly exhibited the talent that this band may actually possess, but doesn't seem to know how to use.

I have a few big issues with this album. First off Tom DeLonge's voice. I know everyone can agree that Tom's voice isn't the greatest, but it's tolerable to some capacity. I would have found it very effective to contrast Tom's voice by utilizing backing vocals. Instead Tom's voice is backed in many songs by more of Tom's voice. Also with a seemingly good cast of musicians, I expected some pretty good musicianship out of these guys. But what we got musically was another Blink 182 album with the addition of synthesized sound effects. The album also has a feeling of overproduction, which seems to be the case because of Tom's initial comments of longer songs and I'm curious as to what may have been lost in final production. With album number one, Angels and Airwaves fall short of expectations, but do show some potential for what could follow.

i don't get why people think this album is so bad. granted, i am a tom delonge ballsucker, but even objectively it's not that bad. sure, it's average, but the only setback i see is the vocals. the music is a pretty big departure from blink (i honestly don't see most of the comparisons), in my opinion.

It feels like an album that will be tons better in good quality--not the subpar leak that's going around. At first I absolutely depised it, but it's come to grow on me a lot and now I think it's pretty sweet but nothing mind-blowing.

Ummm... well, this disc wasn't good, but it was far from terrible. A little boring and such throughout, but I'd toss it in the average pile.
