It’s obvious that Anberlin has drastically evolved since the release of their debut full-length Blueprints for the Black Market. While Blueprints was just a stepping stone, Never Take Friendship Personal was what brought Anberlin into the spotlight with hits like “Paperthin Hymm” and “A Day Late”. Their eccentric melodies and the energy given off from their songs is what drives their music. Now probably one of the biggest bands on the Tooth and Nail roster, Anberlin is definitely going to be feeling the pressure of being at the top. The guys need not worry because Cities will easily set the course for their musical career.

Lead single “Godspeed” sets the tone and pace for the album. Upbeat and charismatic, it is easy to see why the label chose this as the single, but two songs later you hear what’s probably Anberlin’s best song of their career, “A Whisper and a Clamor”. This song is a prime example of the band’s musicianship. While rock bands can write a hit single, most of them don’t offer much lyrically and instrumentally. With Anberlin, you get the whole package. Stephen Christian’s vocals are better than ever and the drumming of Nathan Young has been more developed (even though he already does an amazing job). Deon Rexoat, Joseph Milligan, and Nathan Strayer have found their niche with the strings as well, making for a more solidified rock sound.

Throughout the entire album the music as a whole is different. Anberlin are expanding on their musical boundaries on tracks like “Alexithymia”, the commanding “Dismantle. Repair”, and the breathtaking track “Fin”. “Fin”, which is the last track on the album, will leave a very impressionable mark in your mind. Clocking in at over 10 minutes, the guys took a cue from The Rolling Stones and just went into a room and recorded on a whim. The outcome is an epic sounding anthem. Up until the 3 minute mark, Stephen sings peacefully until the drums and guitars come in full force. What really makes the song is when the children’s choir comes in and drives the song home. It is truly overwhelming.

Cities is the album Anberlin has always wanted to make. With this release, it will take Anberlin to the next level.

4? Seriously? Huh. Their last two albums were decent rock albums, but nothing more than competently done. This one is really that much better? Huh.

I've only heard Godspeed and Haunting, those that I downloaded offa iTunes.

Godspeed rules my life.
I'm not downloading the leak until it is complete, but I have high hopes. From my impressions on the review, I won't be let down.

Ok, don't jump on me too much here, but I didn't get the promo for this for review and I haven't checked the internets lately, but has this actually leaked?

Reclusion and Dismantle:Repair are really good tracks. I'm impressed with this cd. I had lumped them into lame emo-whiner category before i heard cities.

More catchy? I really have to disagree, the last one was such a feel good album, I loved every track and still find 'Time & Confusion' stuck in my head every other day. I can see a lot of people really feeling this record, but in no way is this catchier then the last.

ok, so i've been listening to this album non-stop for the last couple of days...and it's nothing short of amazing. i think that "the unwinding cable car" is one of the best/catchiest songs off a 2007 release thus far. just my opinion though.

I think *Fin may be one of the best songs they've ever written. Not the catchiest, but one of the best.
