Back in the day there was this little known band named Creed…… ok, so everyone and their mom and their uncle and their 8th cousin knew about Creed. After they got uber-popular (I still don’t know how that happened), their lead singer Scott Stapp decided to go solo. What were the remaining members of Creed to do? Form another horribly mediocre radio friendly rock band, of course!
The cd starts off on an ok note with the song “Find the Real”. It didn’t suck too bad, sounding mostly like a crappy grunge version of Creed, but I held out hope that this cd would somehow get better. Unfortunately my hopes were not only left unfulfilled by the rest of Alter Bridge’s songs, they were kicked, pissed on, and called names that I’d rather not say here.
The next song, “God We’re Generic”, err…. I mean “One Day Remains” is screaming out “listen to our awesome Creed-ish guitar sound and horrible Stapp knock-off vocalist”. Sure, there’s a quasi-guitar solo section that almost pulls this song out of suckdom, but it was already too far gone.
The next song, following in the “I wish we were still Creed” vein that this disc is in, rips off “With Arms Wide Open” (minus the strings) in its faux emotional content and slow, emo-rock styling. “Burn It Down” is Alter Bridge’s epic of the cd, clocking in at six minutes and eleven seconds. It’s too bad that six minutes and nine seconds of it are crap (the second of silence before and after the track were the only parts tolerable for me). The next song is called “Metalingus”. Ummm…. what? Are they trying to be clever by making a permutation on the name of the genre they wished they were a part of?
Well, the second half of the disc gets better…… HA! Fooled you, didn’t I? Instead of getting better, this cd only spirals further into the bowels of bad music. “Broken Wings” is a power ballad that’s been done a billion times over by a billion other bands. “In Loving Memory” is the same damn song as “Broken Wings”, just a little mellower. “Shed My Skin” is also the same damn song, just with different words. The other three songs are merely wannabe hard rock songs that will be forgotten immediately after you hear them.
You know what’s even worse than everything I’ve said so far about this cd? Listening to “One Day Remains” makes me wish Creed was still together. That way, none of us would have had to experience the conglomeration of crap that is Alter Bridge. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go pound my head against a rock until I forget all 55 minutes of this cd.
