For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of MTV Unplugged, popular artists come in and play some acoustic songs in front of a live audience. The series had been dead for a while, until MTV brought it back last summer. All Time Low was one of the six artists to be featured in the revival of the series, but the band has fallen short with this EP. All Time Low are at the top of the pop punk genre right now, but this acoustic attempt may just be a cash in for the band.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy All Time Low. Their music is some of the catchiest pop punk to be released in the past few years. The problem I have with this release is the lack of originality. The set is pretty much a low key “greatest hits so far” collection. Featuring fan favorites like “Coffee Shop Soundtrack” and “Dear Maria, Count Me In”, it just seems like another release for fans to have for their collection. The least the band could have done was feature a b-side or cover to give something new to listeners because, let’s face it, All Time Low playing acoustic renditions of their own songs is nothing new.

One good thing about the album is that the band’s music does translate well acoustically. With just acoustic guitars and bongos, the band really pulls off the whole toned down feel of everything. Songs that you would think sound better electric like “Weightless” and “Damned If I Do (Damned If I Don’t)” actually sound pretty good in comparison. The album’s standout track has to be “Remembering Sunday”, an already acoustic song for the band. Kate Voegele joins the band for the song, doing the female vocals of the track beautifully.

While the revival of MTV Unplugged may be exciting, All Time Low’s performance just isn’t that great. This EP is simply a Warped Tour set list played acoustically for the most part. With the DVD extras thrown in, however, this may be a great release for All Time Low fans to have. Overall, though, this acoustic set just falls short and does not seem to appeal to anyone but the already established fans.

I hate this band as well.  And this EP is stupid. Get some decent bands to do unplugged shit, not crappy pop-punk junk like this. What a waste.
