Well AFI are back again with their first full length since "Black Sails in the Sunset," and first release since October 1999's "All Hallows EP." The Art of Drowning features 15 AFI songs, including the secret track, with just over 40 minutes of punk music. I haven't always been an AFI fan but since hearing their older albums I came to enjoy their music, Black Sails in the Sunset was definately a dark album but it came across as a afi musical masterpiece. After one listen to Art of Drowning I found myself in some confusion, it's definately AFI, but the songs just seem too dull as I hear it. Not dull that it isnt hard and fast, but dull as like I think I've heard all these songs a thousand times. Davey still has the same howling voice, with the same backing vocals, and tone to each song.
This time around it appears AFI is taking a different approach to their music sound mixing in different types of punk, mixing up the music. Personally I enjoyed AFI when they had more melodic choruses that everyone could get into and scream as I'm sure they did at their shows. Sacrifice Theory is the only song on this album I can see this happening to. The last song on the album "MorningStar" is a more emocore type song, slow guitar riff with Davey whispering over it, as it slowly moves along, throws in some violins, and finally ends in a slow emo song...which really is pretty cool. All together I'm kind of confused in the direction AFI is going, the music is still cool, but starting to all sound the same to me.
Other comments about the album are "It's not very good...slow and sloppy."
I've become an AFI fan, and couldn't wait to hear this new album, and I am pretty disappointed.
