One of Roadrunner's best kept secrets, 36 Crazyfists, returns with their sophomore release. The men of 36CF were well received after releasing their debut, “Bitterness the Star.” Frontman Brock Lindow hasn't strayed far in vocal style from 36CF's debut, Bitterness the Star. He's got the brutal growls down to a science and his singing voice is amazing as it ever was. The two combine for a schizophrenic assault of sound. Lyrically, Lindow spews his heart and soul through obscurity.
Song For the Fisherman was immediately a stand out track for me not because of the mellow guitar and bass, but because of the lyrics. One interview said that the band was working on the song without Lindow. Afterward, he just took some poetry and laid down the vocals in a spoken word style. It's something you wouldn't expect from a band like this and the end result is truly beautiful. As for the rest of the album, you won't find anything less than a slew down tuned, distortion fused riffs, supported by a very solid rhythm section on this album. As nu metal as that may sound, they don't come across as generic or get lost in the RIAA slut that nu metal has become over the last few years. I mentioned Fisherman as a stand out track already. Other notable highlights include At the End of August, the first single from this release, and The Heart and the Shape. They sternly set you up for the rest of the album and certainly embody this disc's sound. Recently the band shot a video for August and you can find see the final cut on their website. By far my favorite track on the album is Destroy the Map. Buried deep at track 8, this song’s sound is just fucking awesome. Lyrics, vocal style, bass, drums, guitar, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG KICKS ASS. My favorite part is the breakdown chant of "the clouds don't break when the sun is on empty." It definitely gets my vote for second single because I could listen to it over and over and never get sick of it.
Bottom line? I love this band. Their debut was one of my favorites of 2002, the follow up will surely be one of my favorites of 2004. It has met my expectations and more. Originally set to debut in late January, it now hits stores March 16th. Put it on your must-buy list and drown yourself in anticipation.
