Children of Bodom are a band that is frequently accused of “selling out”. It’s an accusation I really can’t quite fathom seeing as they have always played a catchy mix of death and power metal (debate rages amongst metalheads as to their exact specific genre). Since the band’s début back in '97, nothing much has really changed on record. Obviously production has benefited from advancements in technology, and over the years the band's song-writing has strengthened, but Children of Bodom are still playing the same brand of accessible melodic death metal that they always have.
COB do play insanely catchy metal, there’s no doubting that; its just they’ve done this record five times before and with far better results. Every track follows the same formula: four minute slabs of melodic thrash metal riffs; cheesy tinkling keyboards; death metal croaks and predictable power-metal solos. And what's with only 9 tracks? One thing COB don't seem to have noticed is that 9 tracks is not an industry standard for a full length LP, as all of their albums - bar their début (it had a meager seven) - has featured only nine songs. With the majority of the tunes on Bloodrunk barely scraping four minutes - and with only one breaking through to an astonishing 5:05 - the record is over before you know it, and you’re left wondering where the extra three tracks are. Not that it really matters, mind you, since they’d probably follow the exact same precedent and pattern as the rest of the album does.
Its not that Bloodrunk is a bad record either; and I must stress that it's still incredibly catchy and digestible metal, it's just they’ve done this exact same record five times already and it’s just nowhere as good as previous efforts. It's true COB aren’t trying to write prog masterpieces; they’re writing enjoyable bite-sized pieces of death metal, but with nine short tracks and with none of the songs standing out in any way, shape, or form from each other, at the end of the record you're left with the unsatisfied feeling of “is that it?” Unfortunately it is.
