Misery Signals Tries Crowd Funding

Posted by Nick Senior at 08:37AM

It seems like the cool thing to do now.  Wisconsin's seminal metalcore group Misery Signals has decided to utilize Indiegogo to fund its fourth album.  The band is asking $50,000 to fund its as-of-yet-unnamed record.  Go here to check out the band's funding options.

I can't imagine every spending $2,000 on something like that.  If you've got the money and love the band...

This should be good for them. Karl did "Solace" with crowd funding mostly so I'll hold high hopes for this as well.

That worried me for a second. I had the contribute page open for a while and the total was $4,000 something. I contributed my $40 for a cd + tshirt, it goes through and then goes back to the main page saying "thanks...You raised the campaign total to: $8,991".

I'm like shit how much did I contribute! They must be doing decent business, that was only a couple of hours old page.

Also, Protest The Hero asked for like 100,000 I think. They even broke down all the costs. Insane.

$50K to record a full length, plus press thousands of physical copies - including vinyl - is probably about right. They might be putting some of the cash aside to help fund some tours or something too, but releasing an album is a lot more expensive than most people realize.

Nah, what people forget is that part of that cost is printing all the rewards that people are paying for. You pay for the physical CD, the band needs to buy art and pay for the printing of the digipak and the CD. You pay for the vinyl, the band needs to pay to print vinyls. You pay for t-shirts, etc.

Good Kickstarters like these are really just glorified pre-orders.

Ya I guess you are right there. Gotta give em credit I guess if they have a fan base willing to contribute extra money to help them out. Can't really knock that. Just looking at the 50k goal alone, looks greedy, but if they're giving product out for your contribution that's all cool. I won't personally be contributing solely on me not liking the band. Ha.

Its too bad there isn't a place where I could pay them money to not make a new record. That would be great.

I promise I'm not bitching just to bitch; I'm more just having a discussion about when these projects are good and when they're greedy-- because I think this is a case where it is good. People's feelings about the band aside.

The bone I'm picking: you talk about a fan base willing to contribute extra money, but the digital download is $10 (industry standard for established acts, pretty much. I'd appreciate a name your price model, but that's another discussion) and the physical CD is $15 (this includes domestic shipping, so the CD itself costs closer to $11-12, which is, again, industry standard). This project feels pretty on-the-level. And isn't asking anything that wouldn't asked for a retail product.

Mindless Self Indulgence had a goal of $150,000 on their kickstarter. They raised $225,045.

You quoted my statement agreeing that this was a 'good' one. I don't like the band and am not contributing based on that alone. I'm saying fans paying above the minimum asking price, not the band asking higher than industry standard. There are clearly fans kicking down more than the minimum $10 digital download. I think you are bitching cause I don't like Misery Signals.

I really don't care how you feel about the band though, and it's never been about them. The only thing I'm trying to get at here is that this particular kickstarter isn't a shameless moneygrab like your welfare comment implied. They only need about 3,300 fans to buy the CD to make their goal, and their FB like total is 65,000+. Instead of being fronted the money by a label and selling their creative (and cost) control, this is responsible. Not begging for others' money.
