Godspeed You! Black Emperor releasing new album

Posted by Brandon Helms at 06:00AM

Canadian post-rock/experimental outfit Godspeed You! Black Emperor is apparently set to release a new album, their first in roughly ten years. While details are sketchy, the effort is titled Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! and will be available on October 19th via Constellation.

Cargo Records offers up the following:

"GYBE picked up right where they left off, and after almost two years of practicing, playing and touring, Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! delivers two mighty sides of music (bookended by two new drones) that the band had been working up prior to their 2003 hiatus, which they have now shaped into something definitively stunning, immersive and utterly true to their legacy."

This post just reminded me that four or five months ago I bought tix to their show in NO. Thanks for the reminder! Pumped about this, too.

Another band on Decoy that is apparently great, and I've never heard of. I'll give it a spin.

I'm not! that cool Chris.

They are a bit of a time commitment considering their songs average out to about twenty minutes apiece. I'd say give Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven a shot. If five minutes of that makes you want to kill yourself, just forget about them.

I listened to the first couple songs on the new one and one of their older ones. I don't mind it, but really surprised that they seem to be so popular despite being a very avaunt-guard ish extremely artsy instrumental band. I prefer other instrumental acts to this, 20 minute songs can be a bit much to digest, especially if they don't really go anywhere.

They're popular because they WERE the kings of post-rock back in the day. Explosions in the Sky kind of pioneered the twinkly post rock, and Sigur Ros and Godspeed pioneered true forward thinking journey type post rock if that makes any sense.

Makes sense.

For what it's worth, they are definitely a band people name drop without ever having seriously listened to them. Also, one time in college, the class before mine let out late, and I had to sit in the hall. This dingy looking kid across from me had his headphones on and Godspeed booming. When the other class let out and he took his headphones off, I smiled at him and said, "Godspeed, huh?" He looked genuinely pissed off that he wasn't the only person on the whole planet who knew who Godspeed was. So there's that, too.
Personally, I enjoy their albums, except for Yanqui U.X.O, but think their political stuff is kind of ridiculous, considering that not only is the proposition that everyone live in a train depot and be a musician impossible, but that people who do so probably don't have a great handle on the lives of the rest of us who don't. I hope next week they just shut up and play. Also, I hope they get off my lawn!

So basically the dingy looking kids love this band? How rude of him not to offer up his left earbud to your right ear. Haha, when and if I get bored of all the other music out there I will be sure to dinge up a little and listen to these guys.

Saw them last night. Almost half the set was them sitting on the floor setting drones. Very disappointing. Wanted some music. It's like they forgot that all their buildup is supposed to have a payoff. Set just gave me blue balls. Decent amount of the crowd left before the show was over. The rest ended up talking over most of the set. Maybe Godspeed just hates New Orleans.
